Worth buying
Scarlatti wrote nearly all of his 550 sonatas for his pupil, Queen Maria Barbara in the last few years of his life. They are all short pieces which are great fun to play - very quirky, very interesting and accessible to keyboard players of all levels.Schirmer is an excellent publisher of Baroque and early keyboard music and their two volumes of Scarlatti sonatas are no exception. The layout, editing and print quality are excellent (though not quite Henle standard). The editorial comment from Scarlatti biographer and performer, Ralph Kirkpatrick, should make this the edition of choice. However it's not that simple. The problem with Scarlatti is nobody produces an accessible (i.e. cheap) edition of all of them. The different editions don't even share a core 'best of' selection as there would be little agreement here.Basically you don't have a choice i.e. you have to buy an edition that has the particular sonatas you want to play but for general perusal the Schirmer is a great starting point. For what it's worth I have also bought the Hal Leonard CD ROM which contains all the Scarlatti sonatas along with all the Haydn - it's not ideal but given the absurdly low cost it's a good supplement. There are differences between these two sources so worth comparing.

Useful collecty with good notes
A useful edition which gives both the K numbers and the Longo numbers for clarity - both being separate cataloguing systems for Scarlatti's sonatas. Good clear print. The introduction gives some useful approaches to playing the pieces.
