A GREAT COMMENTARY THAT READ LIKE A DEVOTIONAL!
I’m a former pastor (and current writer), and wanted to commend these fine works on 1-2 Samuel…masterful stuff! I’ve been promoting both of these books to just about everyone I know. Our pastors attended the Basic Conference at Alistair Begg’s church last year and when I asked them what was the best part, they said John Woodhouse!I listened to his talk on Romans1 and 2 Kings and was so impressed that I went out the same day and bought both commentaries. Learning a ton! I’m just finishing 2 Samuel and may start them both again. Superb stuff!

Bible Candy
I just got this volume, and have only finished one third of it, but since there are no reviews, I thought I ought to post one even before finishing this WONDERFUL book. Already, I am hoping for a volume on II Samuel to be out soon. This volume is 550 pages without endnotes, but reads readily and is written in a warm conversational tone. This book is filled with valuable insights into many of the familiar Bible characters, which after you have read it, you realize you didn't know as well as you thought you did. It filled me with new admiration for some, explained longstanding puzzlements regarding others, and in general elevated my understanding of I Samuel significantly. I highly recommend it for thirsty Bibliophiles. Thank you, John Woodhouse!

Excellent commentary for expository preaching
I am in the process of preaching through 1 & 2 Samuel. Woodhouse's comments are very helpful. For each of his sections he comes up with a theme, often taken from a New Testament verse. In his comments he then shows how the story from 1 Samuel illustrates that theme. These are very practical lessons. Occasionally I think he is off base with some of his comments, but generally I believe he is right on target. His comments have definitely helped to improve my sermons.

Very enjoyable
I have loved the entire series of commentaries from the Preaching the Word series. They are put into 'sermon' style and are very readable. It is not usually a deeply critical examination of the text, so get a critical commentary to go with it!

Not quite the commentary I was hoping for
While this is a helpful book, it does not provide as much detail as I was hoping to find. The lay person would find this enjoyable. For an in depth study look elsewhere.

This book will help you love God more.
Clear, insightful, contextualised gospel orientated gold! Accessible to layman but rigorous enough for scholarly debate. If you only buy 1 book on 1 Samuel, go no further.
