Absolutely excellent
I grew up eating my grandmother's British cooking and have been trying to find satisfactory recipes for some of the basics - scones, Yorkshire puddings, pasties, etc, and of course also the special occasion puddings and hot cross buns. I bought this cookbook because I got tired of searching online recipes where everybody was trying to put their twist on these items, or clearly hadn't tested a recipe before posting. I haven't been disappointed in this book! I cooked something different from it every single day the first week or two I got it, and everything turned out perfectly. I still frequently use it. Unfortunately I rarely if ever eat meat, so a substantial portion of the cookbook was wasted on me. The other sections are so good, though, that I'm still quite satisfied with the value of the book for the price I paid. Of note, there are more modern recipes for things like naan bread and tabbouleh, which I was pleasantly surprised by and which also turned out beautifully. This cookbook is definitely a new go to for me. Be warned, few pictures, if that matters to you. I don't think it detracts in the slightest, so 5 stars from this happy customer

Not great
This cookbook had great publicity but I found it to be drab and not very useful. I have about 200 cookbooks and I do not plan on keeping this one.

The Cookery Bible by Prue Leith and Caroline Waldegrove
One of my three utterly reliable cookery books. Every recipe I have used has been excellent. They have been tasty, look very well on the plate, some spectacular, and very clear instructions are given. A standard!

The only book you need on your kitchen shelf!
I already had this book and bought it again for my best friend who is also a chef on private boats. To me it the only book you need in your kitchen. It covers everything from catering for large party's to posh dinner parties. If you love food this should be on your shelf. Simply amazing book. Buy it.

Still an important reference
Every kitchen bookshelf should have a copy of this book. Prue's bible is still one of the main 'go to' reference books in the trade, I bought my 1st edition back in 1991 and wouldn't be without it but it is getting a bit fragile now so I have acquired this new edition for everyday use.A must have for every serious cook.

Fantastic Book I would look at this Recipe Book first for any Recipe I needed.
This recipe book not only gives you the recipe in plain English (though sometimes Americanism's is used) in a laid out manner but also if the outcome is not as expected it also gives probable reasons for this below the recipe, the one downfall is that I think the Authors of this book liked to do everything by hand so very little advice is given on how to mix with electric mixers (as overbeating is mentioned in cakes especially something t od owit h the Flour) but otherwise a Great Book and my first choice for trying new recipes and a very wide range of recipes there is too, even a chapter on sauces for Cakes, Meats and Salads which lift your taste buds no end.Would I recommend this book to anyone no I would recommend it to Everyone.Excellent value for money.

A Cook Book, without the frills, and very good it is too!
As my title to this review infers, this is a proper cookbook, not a celebrity chef hightening their profile. It is well laid out, having easy to grasp instructions, with loads of SOLID recipies, incorporating EVERYDAY ingredients. Perhaps not the only cookbook you'll ever want, or buy, but an understanding of this book will underpin your future cooking experiences, and reading. See this as your apprenticeship, and a great aide memoire for those all too forgotten basics. Highly recommended.
