great all around disk array
Excellent product, easy to use, hooked this to a MS-01 with Unraid for my hard disk storage. Works great over the 10gbps usb4/thunderbolt port on the ms-01. Trays easily remove with a tool-less approach to adding drives. Well worth every penny. Using 10TB HGST enterprise drives in 2 bays with no issues on heat, quiet and for usb4, will never saturate the entire speed of the connection.works with software defined raid or jbod.size comparison, just slightly larger than my Synology 920.

Drive Bays are great
I was apprehensive to use an external drive bay but when my server case had an electrical short issue I had to buy new components and I was surprised to learn that even with USB 3.2 the speed outclasses internal sata connections. In a theoretical kind of way, the drives themselves are the bottleneck. It was an easy purchase at that point. Having all my long term storage on the four drives in this bay makes them much more compatible and versatile. Now my server has a much smaller case too.It was very easy to install the drives. My case having an electrical short may have been a very unlikely event but I still feel my drives are better protected in this bay. It's about as small as you can make it but you can't disable the lights so it wouldn't be good in a dorm room or a bedroom. These things are expensive because data is valuable, I think the price was fair. This isn't the kind of component you should cheap out on, but it does go on sale often enough.

BEWARE: These may not be able to power up all four drives at once
UPDATE (Still be aware of your drives' power draw):Terramaster sent me an upgraded power supply (90w vs 72w) to see if it would power up the EXOS drives more reliably. The larger power supply does handle the peak power draw on these drives better. My Kill-A-Watt measures peak power draw when all 4 drives are spinning up at just under 150w, which is too much for the included 72w power supply. Most drives are not going to need this much power, and the unit will work fine for most consumer drives, and most smaller capacity drives.Check the peak power draw in your drives' user manual. This is typically not the same as the numbers on the spec sheets, at least for EXOS drives. For example, the EXOS drives peak at around 35 watts during spin-up, while the spec sheets only discuss the running power at around 10 watts. If you have issues with your drives failing to spin up, contact Terramaster and request the 90w unit, or even better, contact them before you purchase and see if they can send you one to begin with.Other than this issue, the unit is great. It is quiet, easy to install the drives, and seems to just work. That, and the fact that TM volunteered (I didn't ask) to send out a larger power supply, is why I'm bumping this to 4 stars instead of 3. I have a feeling that this unit will just work for most people.INITIAL REVIEW:BEWARE: The unit does not have enough power to spin up 4 drives simultaneously, at least with the Seagate Exos drives I put in. You may need to pull a drive, let it spin up the 3 remaining drives, then insert the last drive hot. This is the only way I've been able to get it to work with 4 drives. Apparently some manufacturers spin up the drives in sequence, rather than simultaneously in order to avoid this problem. This is a HUGE problem for a device that advertises support for 4 drives. Requiring physical interaction like pulling a drive at every power up is problematic.I haven't yet tested whether this will affect the usage post power-up. If, for example, the drives spin down, will it even be able to spin them back up when data is being accessed?I've emailed customer support about this, and will update the review when / if I hear back.

Build quality ok. Speed is excellent.
Overall, build quality is lacking compared to some other units. I like the ability to use standard hard drives as well as ssd's. While it is tool free for 3.5 inch hard drives, it does require a couple steps. A screwdriver is required for 2.5 inch drives. Another issue if you will be moving this around is that the drives don't appear to lock in place.I'm rarely going to swap drives or move the enclosure, so what matters most to me is that the drives stay cool and data transfer is fast. Here it excels. I'm getting 500Mb/s read speed, consistent, which might be limited by my usb port. Write speeds are similar. With write caching turned on, the drives don't chatter much at all.Power management is also very good. I like the fact that it spins up all the drives at once. I have not seen any enclosure that has the drives ready for use faster. Also, when the computer shuts down, it completely shuts off. I'll be buying a second one.

Good storage expansion for Terra master NAS
I bought it for use with a Terra master F2-423. It functions as extended storage with the NAS, configured as an additional NAS TRAID volume. Performance is only a hair less than the TRAID volume internal to the NAS. I am using 8TB Seagate Ironwolf drives in both machines. Tool less drive mounting was easy to use, it is the same mounts on both devices. The install and configuration was simple, using TOS6 (the Terra master NAS OS). TRAID is a Terra master RAID implementation similar to RAID 5, but with the ability to accommodate drive size variations with less wasted space.

Failed completely on day 1
The setup was very simple and worked excellently out of the box, quickly spinning up and making 3 HDDs readable by my Linux server. After one cold reboot, however, the D4-320 completely failed (either the power supply or control board) — none of the 4 bays would power up even a single drive. There was no audible spin-up from the drive, the status lights would not come on, nothing.I am returning and replacing with another of the same model, hoping this was just a defective unit. Will update my review if the replacement fares better (for an extended period of time).
