Creative Problem Solving in School Mathematics

Upper elementary math teacher gold
I had seen a list of problem solving skills in several math texts and a spotty attempt to incorporate them into the curriculum, then I bought a set of edupress. Cards that had problems divided into such skills as draw a picture, make a chart or graph, but Turns out this book is the granddaddy of all that and is the main book to get your class started on a year long problem solving challenge. Sponsored by moems.org. So glad I bought it. Can't wait for school to start to try it. Like having 30 math lesson plans in one book

Delivers what it promises
This is an excellent text for teaching problem solving, in my opinion the main reason to learn and enjoy mathematics. It seems to me that it goes beyond "school" mathematics, though it fits well with Singapore Math, and could help set kids up for math competitions, such as Math Kangaroo and MOEMS. The book offers a methodological approach to solving problem of many kinds rather than computational skills. The best way to teach complex material is by way of worked examples, and that's how this book goes at it -- very successfully. And fortunately for us teachers, the answers to challenge problems are in the back.

great book
This is a wonderful resource for teaching general reasoning skills that will help in mathematics and really any field of study. Perhaps more importantly these are the same skills needed as an adult, not just for your occupation, but also for the myriad challenges that occur in other aspects of your life.I agree with the author that these skills should be taught explicitly and from an early age to allow children to develop the habits of mind that allow them to approach problems with confidence.A good choice to supplement your child's usual schoolwork.Happy reading

Fabulous Problem Solving Strategies
I use this book as curriculum for our fifth grade math olympiad team. If I had these strategies when I was young it would have boosted my confidence in math tremendously. Highly recommended.

This is a really interesting book and is quite challenging for my kid in 4th grade. It is good to work with the kid as a bonding experience.
