Stretching credibility so far it snaps
Sorry I really disliked this. Have read lots of P&P variations and they vary significantly in quality and this one was very very disappointing. Elizabeth is a clever child - fair enough but she is a right smug know it all in this. The idea of Mr Bennet, the Earl of Matlock and Mr Darcy senior plotting a marriage between our principals from childhood and then low and behold they fall in love on sight - sorry - stretching it a bit. The idea of the cottage is good - I like that- but once Whickham takes action (trying not to give spoilers here), Elizabeth's obsession with being clever when she is in a very scary situation, is just shallow and silly. Plot moves too fast here also and some serious cases of bad editing What- is she trying to be a Regency Sherlock Holmes in a skirt - it just doesn't ring true, nor does her behaviour later. In summary, a good idea which gets lost about a third of the way through.

Lack of chemistry
Good read and lots of drama. Was however disappointed that there was no build up to D&E falling in love. It was talked about by other characters and assumed and then jumped straight to the proposal. The lack of chemistry and tension build up was however my only gripe.

An interesting adaptation
This is different from the usual stories in that Mr Bennet isn't hiding in his study but is actually a friend of Mr Darcy Sr and Lord Matlock because they all attended University together. Matlock meets a 5 year old Elizabeth Bennet who already knows how to play chess and is as interesting as her adult self. She spends time with both Richard and his older brother and many of the encounters are absolutely amazing and caused me to laugh until I cried.Mr Darcy Sr decides that Elizabeth would be perfect for his son and Matlock decides to help the relationship along once they are older.Mr Bennet has set up Oxford Cottage for the 3 older girls to learn what goes into a home including cooking, baking, growing vegetables. All the things that most have servants to do they are required to accomplish that in order to understand how hard it is for their staff and gain insight into running an estate. Mr Bennet and his friends Mr Gardiner and Mr Phillips work with Matlock to encourage Bingley to lease Netherfield and have Darcy's assistance in order to get the couple introduced.Along the way they discovered a scheme that Wickham and Mrs Younge devised to kidnap or strongly encourage young girls into being sold to brothels after being essentially raped by Wickham. The secondary plot is Richard being sent to investigate this because so many girls were missing or dead.I enjoyed reading this and would recommend it. Its missing several characters ( Collins, Charlotte, Caroline) and others are calmer ( Mrs Bennet, Kitty and Lydia) with minimal lines for Jane or Mary. It essentially revolves around Elizabeth and Darcy and the older men.

Fun story, lively Elizabeth
Elizabeth and her sisters, Jane and Mary, run Oxford Cottage as a learning experience in keeping a household. Darcy and Bingley are sent their way and the men build relationships with the ladies. They are joined by Georgiana and Mrs. Younge and the storyline unfolds from there. Wickham is up to trouble but you don't actually hear much of him. No Lady Catherine or Mr. Collins. Darcy also doesn't have the same reservations about Elizabeth and Elizabeth isn't annoyed with him to start. Mrs. Bennett is much more likable, but they're is also less of her interactions. I liked the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth but you don't actually see the relationship build. Elizabeth is clearly the star and is almost Sherlock Homes clever. Mostly the characters were just very well developed and fun. You never do really get an answer to what the higher level, more important thing Colonel Fitzwilliam is involved in but that doesn't take away from the storyline. Overall a good book and I feel like I will be reading it again.

Nice
I liked this more than I usually do when there is not much of a love story. Ms. Brown found a way to make a story that was more filled with others and events to still be engaging enough for me to care about the couple. Though I compliment this ability, I also see the lack of romance as a negative. I think the plot could have maintained its focus even while allowing readers to witness E&D faking in love. I also have a hard time believing that those who risked the safety of others would have been so easily forgiven.
