God Of War Returns in Spectacular Fashion
For those of us who waited 8 long years to the follow up of what happened to Kratos after God Of War III your patience has been well rewarded in God Of War (Or Chronologically God Of War IV). My hat goes off to Both the Staff and Game Director, Craig Barlow of Santa Monica Studios for realizing that they needed to re-invent the God Of War Franchise but kept the previous history of the previous entries of the franchise, So going into the new game you can still have the feeling of the original narrative (which is mentioned frequently in this game) but move into the undiscovered mythology of the Norse Gods Lore which does not feel it had been retreaded (Basically where the franchise had gotten stale in both narrative and game mechanics by God Of War: Ascension). Narrative Background: About 15 to 20 years in the aftermath of the events of God War III we find Kratos cutting down a tree to make a funeral pyre for the mother of his 12 year old son Atreus who had passed away due to unknown circumstances just prior to beginning the game. Shortly after Kratos had started the funeral pyre, Kratos takes Atreus on a hunt to judge if he is ready to help carry out his mothers last request to take her ashes to the tallest peak of the Norse lands for her final resting place. Returning back to their home and failing to pass his fathers test a stranger mysteriously turns up at their doorstep revealing he is aware of Kratos's past and demands he turns over something that had been promised to him. After dealing with the stranger in familiar Kratos fashion, Kratos decides to go through with his mates last request earlier than he had wanted to, despite feeling his son was not completely ready for journey, leaves their home and travels to Midgard to complete his mates request and keep his son safe from this new threat. During the journey Kratos is forced to reconcile his past while trying to insure not to pass on the same mistakes to his son. Game Mechanics: As mentioned in the description the Game Mechanics of God Of War have been COMPLETELY re-invented from literally the ground up. The old "Side Scrolling" mechanics with the fixed camera has been completely removed (It was already looking dated by GOW III) and replaced with a third person system, so be prepared to re-learn the Dual Shock controls. Leveling and skills was also rebuilt as well to not only include Kratos but Atreus, along with buying improvements for either character with XP or Hacksilver (The in game money) found through out the game which can be redeem through 2 dwarf brothers that can buy improvements to your weapons and armor. Another big change is that the game is now Open Ended (After reaching Midgard) to where you can deviate from the main quest at any time to do side quests (Similar in vein to the Fallout and Fry Cry Franchises along with another one of Sony's other releases Horizon Zero Dawn) which is encouraged. Another addition to the new game is the active participation of your supporting character (Again similar in vein to both Naughty Dogs The Last Of Us and Irrational Games Bio Shock Infinite) which will aid you in battle and become more useful the more you upgrade him. 1st play through: For you veteran gamers out there I would heavily recommend playing on the default setting especially in lieu of having to relearn the control layout, for the causal gamer I would recommend playing the "Narrative Experience" (Similar to Horizon Zero Dawn) which will emphasize on more of the story than challenge. Questionable Mini Games: For you God Of War Veterans that did or did not know already the "Sex" Mini Games are not present, so if you are a perv buying the game just for that reason then you will sorely be disappointed. Besides with the Father and Son Narrative Santa Monica Studios is going for it would not have fit anyways. Overall: Even if you have not played the previous titles in the God Of War franchise (and especially if you have) I can not put into words how much I recommend this game. The new Game Mechanics with the great narrative makes this game a must have.

Get PS4 just for this game!!!
I’ve been playing Xbox for a long time now. All my friends have it and thats just the way its been. Ive owned all the Playstation models released so nothing against Sony or the PS. Ive also played and finished all the God of War of games and loved every minute of them. When I saw the new one with a slightly aged Kratos I was very interested...so much so I ordered a PS4 Pro just to play it. I set everything up tonight and popped the disc in. I have to say the opening scene alone was incredible! The visuals are jaw dropping and the audio in my theater room is some of the best Ive heard in a while. This was all excellent but I still didnt get to try this new game style something that was totally different than previous iterations of the game. I dont want to ruin anything but I played until I met someone willing to upgrade my Levithian Axe. All I could think about the entire time I played was how amazing this experience has been. The way the snow pushes out of the way when you or Atreus walks through it is mind blowing. The combat system so far has been very cool a welcome addition to the franchise in my opinion. Fast paced, but not as hectic hack and slash as previous games...It just feels more controlled and I love throwing the Axe! The story is very cool so far and Kratos has this maturity to him thats just awesome (dont worry hes still a beast!). Overall Id say purchasing a PS4 for this game alone was well worth it!! Dont hesitate to pick this one up and experience something completely out of this world! Update 4/23/18: So I spent the weekend playing this masterpiece! I was kind of happy were still thawing from a blizzard. I gotta say GoW actually gets better and better as you play. I know a lot of people miss the blades of kaos and the frantic hack and slash but I just love the combat in this game! As I got out of the woods and headed towards the mountain, Im just blown away by the scope of this game, i find myself looking up just to take in the whole “picture”. I still dont want to post any spoilers but the scenery and locations I’ve seen are incredible! The size of the creatures and landscapes is enormous, even the Godly Kratos is dwarfed in size by the things this game presents. I can truly say this is probably the best video game I’ve ever played.

If you own a PS4, you need to own God of War! Thank me later.
One of the Best action adventure games of 2018 hands down. I've been following the God Of War series since the original Playstation and this latest iteration is the best so far. You DO NOT have to play the prior games in order to follow the series, it seems Santa Monica Studio has made a different story but still keeps the G.O.W. legacy going. Here's my take on it the story, I would compare this to the latest Wolverine movie as an analogy. It's been many years since GOW 3, an aging Kratos has left Greek universe and now running away from his past is trying to start new in the Norse universe, where he wanted to live a quiet life. After his second wife dies and leave him with his son Atreus, his wife's dying wish is to scatter her ashes on the top of the highest mountain which Atreus wants to complete with great enthusiasm. As they prepare and wait for Atreus to get over a sickness, the shadowy and menacing Norse God, Baldur appears at their door and forces Kratos to face his past. This is were the game starts and their journey to fulfill Krato's wife's dying wish begins. The game is different from the past GOW games. Kratos now wields the Leviathan Axe, a weapon left to him by his late wife. In the past, Kratos had the blades of chaos with it's long reach gave players a sense of comfort knowing it will reach enemies keeping them at a good distance even from behind. This sort of weapon made past GOW games more of a hack and slash, button mashing type of game. It's still this way don't get me wrong but to less of an extent and more on precision. The Leviathan Axes are now my favorite weapon for Kratos. It forces players to get out of their "keeping enemies at a safe distance" and get them out of their comfort zone. As you play and develop both Kratos and Atreus, the story of father and son pulls you in and makes you closer to their characters and their dysfunctional relationship. I give this game the best score for enjoyment of playing the game and well as the story line. The creators somehow pulled out a rabbit out of their hats when creating this story of continuing the GOW franchise. At first it seemed stupid but as the story and game play progress the story is perfect.

What can I say! WHAT CAN I SAY! First the graphics and attention to detail in this game is AMAZING. Just when you think you have found every chest and picked up every ounce of coin in an area, somehow you discover another little hidden crack with some loot in it on your way out. The art design is stunning. One of the reasons I was so excited about this game is the focus on the Norse legends. Marvel has provided a very limited and skewed version of Thor and Odin. This game really did its research and the environments are rich with colors and honestly things I've never seen before in a video game. The 9 realms are brought to life in a very grand and jaw dropping way. The story and little interactions between father and son throughout really pulls you into their relationship. There are times when the son acts like a typical kid where he asks if we are there yet, he constantly longs for his dead mother, sometimes Kratos wants to comfort his son but doesn't know how so he stops just shy of putting a reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. Not to mention the combat is challenging. You will get into fights where you are out powered and will need to come back later once you've upgraded your gear more. The one long shot camera for the whole game really does make a difference. It makes you feel as if you are there and when you are just destroying an enemy with your bare hands, you see all that gore and detail. I have never owned a Playstation. Never played any of the God of Wars. I purchased my new PS4 just for this game and so far, I have to say it's worth it.

Masterpiece game of the year top contender for sure!
This game is a game where everyone involved put their full creativity into it. This is a game every competitive gamer should experience. The bots are amazing and well coordinated to keep you challenged every minute of the game. It is non stop action and countless boss fights. What I love the most about this game is that it is challenging for even the most experienced gamer even on the easiest difficulty you will encounter a boss that will make it worth your bucks. I am currently playing this game on the hardest difficulty and currently seeing my buddies struggle with even the easiest difficulty. I am usually the gamer who passes single player games in 2-3 days. However, this game playing in the hardest difficulty, not rushing because it is such a great game, as well playing all the side missions can say this game is EPIC. Hours and HOURS of fun. Even in 1080p the game looks amazing. I have found absolutely no glitches while playing this game which is a plus in todays gaming standards. Combat system is one of the best out there. The story is actually quite intriguing but I will leave you guys to find out! I would buy this game twice just to support santa monica studios. That's how great this game is! For those giving bad reviews because of the codes Review the seller and not the game. My code worked as soon as I received it through EMAIL! I have always pre ordered on amazon and received all bonus pre orders as expected hard to take other people credible when they have issues with codes. Game is a must have ignore the code reviews.

Possibly the Best PS4 Game Out and Maybe Even 2018's Game of the Year
This will probably end up being my favorite game of 2018. If something else is better than this in 2018 then this was a really good year for video games. I won't go too deep in to the story because of easy things to spoil. You are Kratos, the Greek god of war...and last remaining Greek god. After the events of God of War 3 Kratos traveled to a new land, fell in love, took a new wife, and had a son. The game starts with your wife having just passed so you and your son decide to travel to the tallest peak in the land to spread her ashes. Then a stranger knocks on your door... The combat is pretty different from the original games. You now have a returning frost axe (think of a mix between Thor's axe, Jarnborn, and his hammer, Mjolnir) and can go between using it, its runic abilities, and your fists. Your son, Atreus, can also assist in combat. You can upgrade you and your son's abilities as well as equip new abilities and loot. You can also upgrade, craft, and discover new items as you go. The graphics are fantastic, especially on a PS4 Pro. The soundtrack is also amazing. So far this competes with Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn for one of the best looking games I've played (including PC). The game is also open world, a first for the series, and also has side quests...another first! If you like God of War games give this a try or if you like action adventure games. If you have a Ps4 I think you should definitely at least rent this to see if its something you enjoy. I am about 40+ hours into the game and I still have stuff to do.

It's okay, *until you get mid-way, it gets better*. It's just not particularly unique.
EDIT: So I continued to play it mostly because my friend wanted to see much of it. Now, I'll admit that the story, the gameplay and the characters began to get much more interesting half way in, when you get the special weapon which I won't name, and scenes which began to inspire a satisfying feel. So I give credit here from this point onwards. However, the kid remains annoying. I'm still not sure about the overall drama between the Norse gods and Kratos, but it remains an experiment to continue looking out for. Still, the camera needs tweaking in fight scenes. Let's be honest. This game isn't about God of War. This game is about what's next for the next God of War game. Kratos from the original franchise is pretty much gone. The game is no doubt an epic adventure. But it feels like many other games I've played before. Hellblade, Last of Us, Skyrim, Tell-tale series like the Walking Dead, and Uncharted: This GOW is a combination of these games repackaged as a new game with unique elements here and there. The game feels tiresome. The story is stretched, the boss fights are narrative-driven with little game control over many scenes. GOW is a tell-tale series. The kid has an accent that begs to ask where he grew up. The kid is also annoying when he often repeats what you're expected to do. This game isn't GOW, it is something else.

Annoyingly Good
I actually wanted to give this game a bad rating, but I just can't. I am the opposite of the current video game trends, I love hack and slash/button mashers, I hate open world and I hate difficult. Especially difficulty, I'll never understand why dying over and over again is fun to people. I want to feel powerful in a game, high difficulty is the opposite of that. Life itself is difficult and I am powerless, why do I want the same in a video game? I digress, but what I just described is exactly what God of War USED to be. It is now more difficult, it is MUCH less hack and slash, and it is open world. Everything I like about video games tells me to hate this game, especially considering that the previous games were right up my alley. But the game is just so well put together. Every time I die I feel like I don't like the difficulty and is too high but then it only takes me one more try to defeat who just killed me. This means they have tweaked the difficulty just right. I don't notice what some people are complaining about with the font being small but then again I play just 4 feet away from a 65" TV. Every time I feel like the game is getting boring something fun or exciting happens. So as much as I would like to hate this game I keep playing it, and keep surprising myself when i get farther despite it being more difficult than every other entry in the series.
