My audiobooks (in mp3 format), take 3-5 minutes to start playing. Is that normal? Is there a fix so they start playing right away when I push “play”.

If your audio books are in MP3 format then you should be able to listen to them on your PC. You can then confirm whether there is dead space at the beginning of the file - which is probably the case.

Which is the better way to go, this walker h2, or a headphone amp(portable of course)?

Hello, We won't be criticizing other's product but our HIFI WALKER H2 is strong enough if you want to use it as an amp. Technically, H2 can drive a headphone up to 150 ohm with detailed and loud sound quality, but we have even tested it with HD650 using the line out port. Our player supports a huge number of different audio file formates including DSD, DFF, FLAC, APE, WMA Lossless, M4A, AAC, OGG, MP3, and WMA. Unfortunately, the H2 does not include an external speaker but you do not have to wear earbuds to listen to the music since you can connect your bluetooth speaker to our player. How long is the playing time with the battery. Is there a protective case that comes with it?
