Perfect replacement for my mouse-shorted OEM capacitor
My 14 year old Heil AC unit would not start. I turned off the power at the breaker box, took the access panel off of the outside fan/compressor unit and the original capacitor had been shorted out by a nesting mouse. Apparently the mouse "walked the Green Mile" over the contacts on the 440V AC capacitor and fried himself and the capacitor. I removed the old capacitor, noted it's electrical parameters and physical size and looked locally for the part but no one had it in stock. I called 3 suppliers and it was 7-10 days to order the part locally. Screw that - I located and ordered the new one on Amazon and it arrived 2 days later.I cleaned the surfaces up with a small bronze brush and ammonia and cleaned the start/stop switch with electronic terminal spray cleaner. With everything cleaned up, I replaced the defective capacitor with the new one, made the 3 spade lug connections and it fired right up and worked perfectly. I saved $100+ on a service call and did a better job cleaning out the fried mouse than they would done. So except for the mouse and local AC service company, everyone came out ahead. It's getting to the point that looking locally for parts like this is a real pain and it takes longer to run them down, drive to the supplier(s) and pick them up. The prices are higher locally even when the parts are in stock and it's simply not worth the time to shop locally anymore. The unhappy mouse is seen below
