Are the shelves strong enough for jeans?

Yes. I have all my jeans and sweaters folded and they are fine. There is some give to the plastic liner that is the shelf but the construction holds up and works extremely well. Ended up ordering another one of these and love it!

Does the rod have to come out of the closet to attach the hangers? Or do they snap on some how?

It fits on the rod in your closet like a hanger and is very stable. You do NOT have to remove your rod.

what are the dimensions of this hanging unit(lxwxh) when it is assembled?

55" long from hanging over rod12" wideEach section is 12" x 8"

each section is 12" high & 8" deep or 8" high & 12" deep. Thank U.

If you do the math correctly, the previous responder was mistaken. Each individual section is 12" wide, 12" deep, and 8" high. The unit is 50" high and has 6 shelves; keeping in mind that the hook portion at top is approximately 2 inches, the shelving portion is actually closer to 48 inches. 48 divided by 6 is 8. So each of the 6 sections is 8 inches high.
