Fantastic 4K release of Prince's classic first film.
I actually got the Blu-Ray version of Purple Rain a few months ago, but when I saw that a 4K version was coming out, I knew I had to get it. Am not disappointed.Hard to believe that this movie is now 40 years old, but it's been around long enough that I'm sure most know the story. It's basically a semi-autobiographical account of Prince's early career with Prince portraying "Kid" and just about everybody else portraying themselves (including Morris Day, Apollonia Kotero and the members of Prince's band, The Revolution). Kid and The Revolution are regular performers at First Avenue Clue in Minneapolis (where Prince really did get his start) and Kid not only has to deal with a turbulent home life with his parents, but also a growing romance with Apollonia, intense rivalry with Morris and a growing dissatisfaction among his fellow band-members. Kid's star could fall before it even has a chance to rise. However, we get to see his growth as the songs help tell the story. While the acting is not all that great (the only professional actors in the cast were the ones portraying Prince's parents), we all have to admit that we're really in this movie for the music. The soundtrack is legendary and is still played everywhere 40 years later. There's also the look and fashion that really takes you back to the 80's and makes this a seminal film of the decade. The 4K version of this film is really top-notch. All that you expect from 4K is present in this film. Great picture and sound. Special features include Feature Commentary, a documentary on First Avenue Club (which is a holdover from the previous Blu-ray and DVD releases) as well as music videos from not only Prince & the Revolution, but Morris Day & The Time and Apollonia 6. Sadly, other previous documentaries on the making of the film, the fashion of the times and the film premiere were left off. Also, the music videos are in the lowest resolution possible so it's kind of jarring to switch from movie to music videos. Would be nice if somebody someday decided to do an upgrade to the music videos and make them look as good as the film itself. However, that's fairly unlikely as there doesn't seem to be much market for 4K music videos. However, the main attraction is the film itself, so we can be content with that. Also wanted to point out that the package just contains the 4K disc and a code for the Digital Copy. There is no Blu-Ray included for those interested in having multiple versions of the film.Any fan of Prince should get this 4K version of Purple Rain. You won't be disappointed in the slightest.

Still a really great movie and looks amazing in 4K HDR
I recently purchased this based on reviews and was not disappointed. The restoration work and HDR grading make this film pop from the screen. The stage performances highlight the lighting very well and without blooming. This is a great looking disc and the upgraded 5.1 audio is good too. The included original stereo track is also clean and clear. As someone that personally watched this in the theatre back in the day, and owned a copy on virtually all home video formats (VHS, beta, Video Disc, Laserdisc.DVD, Blu-ray, digital, and 4K), this is by far the best picture and sound ever.Do yourself a favor and buy this 4K disk… you deserve it 👍

4K version. Decent quality that's better than the blu ray.
Movie itself looks and sounds good from a technical standpoint. Movie is still a bit wonky in the script, but it's Prince and the music is great. Included videos are upscaled. Not the greatest but they still look decent on my 70" 4K considering that they were made for for standard, smaller resolution tvs in the 80s. Rating is for the movie as it looks and sounds, not on the quality of the script/acting because that's always subjective. HDR with older movies always looks odd because most people will remember seeing it differently over the decades, unlike newer films. Just keep that in mind.

4K version outstanding
Worth the upgrade from standard Bluray.4k HDR picture is brilliant. Actually see things I hadn't notice previously. For example, all the freckles on Morris's face.Of course the TV and it's video processor will factor in on your picture quality. But regardless their is an upgrade from standard Bluray.

Great Christmas Gift
I gifted this to my son who is an avid vinyl collector. It’s a great price for a music legend and was exactly what I was looking for and decently priced.

Purple Rain weathers time and stands AWESOME still
I remember this movie, this soundtrack from back when it was brand new. And I was a small kid, did not understand really what was going on, but dug the music and this musical cat thinking outside the musical box that I knew.Years pass and I forget (through no conscious decision, rather other music and life factors move me other directions) about this epic album. Then along comes a friend of mine, into DJing who excites me into joining him in the world of spinning, of vinyl. So now that I have plunked down a few hundred on equipment and a few hundred on vinyl from local record stores (please continue to support local vinyl as well as Amazon "big box" efforts), what is an aspiring DJ to do?Listen to music. I tracked down every CD, every MP3 I could find and combined this with vinyl. Listening to music was literally like homework and I would race home after work and listen to at least a few hours of music a day. After a music marathon (and operation credit card reduction) month, it was time to select various classics that basically every music owner should own (and especially own on vinyl for any DJ work). First two things that popped in my head, were Purple Rain by Prince and Thriller by Michael Jackson. Both albums influenced me earlier in life, were pivotal in my musical (and therefore perhaps life) decisions and have influenced even who I am today.Purple rain, purple rain... The only thing that could have sounded any better then that was the intial needle touching to the vinyl (MAN, I LOVE THAT SOUND). I usually run around and do other stuff while I am listening to music (I bought wireless headphones, see my other reviews), but I literally had to just sit. And listen. And love. Again. Listening to this album inspired me to see the movie again, and BOY, did I miss alot when I was young. This is not a movie or record to play for children, not sure how this one slipped passed the parents exactly. But buy it, in some form, appreciate its musical pageantry, its history and its epic status as one of the (comic book guy from the simpsons voice)... best... albums... ever!So yeah, bought it off a Amazon Seller, shipping was fine, condition was alright, music and experience = priceless!
