Great all around P-bass pickup
With so many aftermarket pickup options its overwhelming and difficult to make the right choice. IMO these are a great starting point, very affordable and super solid tone. They have the quintessential P bass sound, warm, punchy, articulate and very even across the neck. I replaced the v-mods than come standard in Fenders American Professional series with SPB-1's, and there was an immediate huge difference. Because these are not necessarily tonally colored one way or the other (like many $ boutique brands can be), but stay true to a great classic P sound, they work for nearly any genre...from classic country to heavy rock. If your wanting to try new pickups for a P bass, start with the SPB-1's.

No contest
It is impossible to get good tone without this pickup. In fact, it's impossible to even play bass without this pickup.

As far as the sound goes it's simply wonderful! I was expecting an improvement but I didn't ...
I purchased this pickup to upgrade a Squier Affinity (a CY00 serial number model). I needed to enlarge the holes in the plastic shells to allow the pickup to move up and down freely. On this particular bass I had to double up on the foam pads under the pickup to get them to the right height. I'm sure depending on the bass this might not be needed. As far as the sound goes it's simply wonderful! I was expecting an improvement but I didn't think it would be this much. Beautiful, even clarity of tone from lowest to highest notes. Good response to volume and tone control. One point to consider if you're doing an upgrade is the wiring harness in the bass - make sure it has quality components and they're properly soldered. I used one from Bayou Audio - first class all the way. New chrome flatwounds completed the setup.

Great vintage tone
Great pickup! I originally replaced my Player Series P with an EMG GZR. It turns out that wasn’t the sound I was looking for. This Duncan is exactly what I needed. Much more of a vintage tone. It gives me the thump and clarity that I was looking for. Love it!

Sweet-sounding pickup
I already had this pickup in a Japanese P-Bass and that bass sounds so good that I never played my '74, which is beautiful but sounded gutless and harsh in comparison. I tried a Quarter Pound in the '74, and found it to be great for hard rock, but nasty and over-the-top for everything else. So I ended up putting one of these in it too, and I'm thrilled with the result. It has just the right balance of solid, supportive bottom, and sweet, nuanced mids and highs. This is my all-time favorite all-around P-Bass pickup. And the price is right, too!

Great sound for recordings
Aside from the fact that the sponge was not big enough to allow the pickup height to be taller, I am very pleased with this seymour duncan pickup. You just can't go wrong with SD. I recorded a DI of a high end P Bass and compared it with the DI recording of this pickup in my Squire and the SD pickup held its ground against it.

OTTIMA SODDISFAZIONE

Unmuffled my MiM
I have a Mexican made 50’s P Bass, pretty much faultless for a P but the stock pickup though not at all bad was just slightly unrefined for my tastes. There was just a hint of distortion on the low notes yadda yadda, my main bass is a Stingray and I also have a Rick both of which have pretty focused clean sounds and my aim was to get the P slightly closer to that. Yep, this pickup did it. Still sounds totally like a P, which is handy as that’s what I wanted but really cleans up the fuzz keeping the fundamental tone. Was going to spend big on a ‘boutique’ brand but I’m glad I tried this first. Solved my problem totally.Mine did come with ‘Seymour Duncan’ branded pickup covers, although a tight fit I slotted the pickups into my own cream coloured covers. In other news, the fact this works after my sloppy ham fisted shaking attempts at soldering leads me to believe fitting it is fool proof. I’m really bad with a soldering iron. Really bad.
