Condensed Matter Field Theory

Very clear and tons of little nuggets of gold
This is a FABULOUS text. A very thorough and very careful study of this text will develop deep intuition.A&S provide TONS of detailed examples and applications. More elaborate examples are developed periodically though the text. Examples include quantum dissipative tunneling, 1D tomonaga-luttinger liquid, using and XY models, non linear sigma models, kondo, chern Simons, non-eq, and much MUCH moreI am beyond surprised how much detail is packed into 800 pages. There are some annoyances I have however. I'd much prefer a single application proceed from start to finish in the same section. In some cases you need to flip between 2 or 3 chapters to reorient yourself for a specific application...this is merely a minor inconvenience and if you take detailed notes you can just refer to those as you go along.Another inconvenience is the small margins. I prefer MASSIVE margins for note taking but these are maybe 1/2-3/4 inch. This book will prepare you VERY well for more advanced books (fradkin) and topics or current research. One HUGE problem however has nothing t do with the content. Cambridge press evidently has cut back costs while maintaining price and the result is binding that fall apart. If you buy a 70$ hardcover book you kind of expect the thing to not fall apart but I've had this happen with more than a few Cambridge books. It only takes a month or so before they separate from the hardcover. Buyer beware

The book is good at skipping all trivial steps while maintaining all needed ...
A very thorough and inventive treatment of quantum field theory in the condensed matter context. The book is good at skipping all trivial steps while maintaining all needed for understanding and summarizing results in a way that makes it easy to also use it in an encyclopedia way. I really recommend this book. It's often similar to elegance to landau lifshitz.Note: I used the book as a good night literature self learning during the summer to broaden my horizon and if it does well it's at broadening one's horizon, too.

Wonderful book for Self-study.
I think this book is the best book for condensed matter. You can self-study condensed mater with this book, and you also can learn the history of condensed matter.

Simple Language
This book is a good introduction to Field Theory applied in condensed matter physics. In dealing with two difficult subjects the authors do it in a very simple language. This is very important either to beginners or experts. There are very good solved examples to illustrate each section. Besides, there are small boxes citing the people behind the development of the issue.

Almost everything you need to know to perform independent research
Covers almost everything. Another thing I love is this book comes with a lot of good exercises and problem sets worked out.

Great introduction to a huge, vibrant field
This book is very clearly written, with good motivation and broad explanations for the underlying philosophy of condensed matter physics. It introduces important and instructive examples for fairly thorough study, with each example clearly building on the previous one.

Good information, way too many typos
The title says it all. Having worked diligently through the text and the problems at the end of each section, there is essentially a sign error, factor missing, or random factors of i at just about every step. It seems as though it gets worse and worse as you move towards the later chapters of the book. For anyone looking to work through the problems as practice, prepare yourself for this. You will be on your own and can't really rely on their work. There are also very many approximations and assumptions that are completely glossed over. Typos such as this persist throughout the text but are most prevalent in the problems at the end of each chapter.Overall, this book will prepare you for the field on a conceptual level, but not when it comes time to make a CORRECT calculation.
