Robust Workhorse Microphone / Shure is Legendary
TLDR: Killer sounding mic, built like an absolute tank, XLR/analog connection, requires 48V phantom power from an audio interface/mixer, it is not a USB microphone! As a musician, I have a background in audio production and own a lot of microphones and have owned or currently own microphones from Shure, Beyerdynamic, Neumann, Rode, Audio Technica, Blue, Oktava, etc. I certainly don't need another microphone for anything in particular, but I had seen multiple reviews on this mic and the audio samples that I heard really impressed me. This mic has a nice presence without being too bright or harsh. Condenser microphones when recorded digitally preserve a lot of high frequency information, and not all of that information is pleasing to the ear. So it's a really a delicate balance of a mic being able to capture that high frequency information in a musical way, microphones are really the first form of EQ being used in the recording process besides the source itself and space where it's being recorded. And while some condenser mics pick up excess noise and reflections in the room, this mic is actually pretty forgiving in less than ideal acoustic spaces. This is an analog XLR microphone, and has no digital/USB type of connection. Also, being a condenser microphone it requires 48V phantom power to pass signal (phantom power is not required for most dynamic microphones like a Shure SM57 for example). So an XLR cable and audio interface with a mic preamp, like a Focusrite Scarlett or Universal Audio Volt, are required to get sound into a computer. The pictures don't really do justice to show just how robust this mic is, when I opened the package and held the mic for the first time, I was kind of blown away with how solid it is. It's very heavy and there is no give whatsoever to the metal mesh portion. I bought the full kit with the shockmount, pop filter, and very nice carrying case, it's a great setup, but you can save about $80 if you buy just mic without the full kit. For someone recording their own music at home, you could record any instrument with this; vocals, guitars, piano, drums/percussion, wind instruments, etc. I plan to get a second one to use for stereo recording of acoustic guitar, and I think this mic would also be great too for VO/podcasting/streaming. Most of the reviews that were critical of this mic, were complaing about the price. I'm good with the price and I know that being a Shure mic, it will last a long time, and the company will be around a long time. Some of these companies producing microphones and other audio related gear on Amazon make me wonder how many of these products/companies will actually be in existence in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years? Certain companies in audio I will pay a premium for like RME, Universal Audio, Neumann, Beyerdynamic, and Shure. These are not companies that have cropped up in the last few years making products that follow trends, they are well established companies that have been dedicated to making quality gear for decades and are not worried about competing with all of these fly by night brands offering cheap products. If you are looking for a $40-$50 condenser microphone, there are certainly other options out there.

⭐️⭐️🎙️🎤 Shure continues to lead the industry. Fantastic Sound Quality!
Title: “Fantastic Sound Quality with Minor Flaws” As someone who loves recording music and podcasts in my home studio, the Shure SM4 Studio Recording Microphone has been an incredible addition to my setup. While it’s not perfect, it delivers professional-quality sound that has significantly elevated my recordings. What I Loved: The sound quality is outstanding—crisp, detailed, and warm. It captures vocals with a natural richness that feels professional right out of the box. I’ve also used it for recording voiceo and found it picks up subtle nuances very well. The cardioid polar pattern is excellent for minimizing background noise, making it ideal for less-than-perfect home setups. The build quality is another standout feature. It’s solid and durable, clearly designed to withstand regular use. I’ve accidentally knocked it over a couple of times, and it still performs like new. The sleek design is also a nice bonus—it looks great in any studio setup. What Could Be Better: While I love this microphone, there are a few minor downsides. The sensitivity is quite high, which means it can pick up some unwanted noise if you don’t have good soundproofing. It’s not a deal-breaker, but something to keep in mind if you’re working in a noisy environment. Another thing is the lack of included accessories. At this price point, I expected at least a basic desk stand or a simple phantom power XLR connector. Adding those separately is an extra expense and something to consider when budgeting. Overall Verdict: Despite these small drawbacks, the Shure SM4 Studio Recording Microphone is a fantastic piece of equipment. The sound quality is well worth the investment, and the build ensures it’ll last for years. Whether you’re a podcaster, musician, or voiceover artist, this microphone is an excellent choice that will take your recordings to the next level. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Incredible sound and build with a few minor quirks. Highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade their recording gear!

Excellent vocal clarity and warmth for the price — a great choice for singers
I am an independent singer-songwriter and producer and have been making music for years. Since I brought Shure SM4 I put out 3 songs already using only this mic for the vocals. Let me just say first that the vocals received mostly positive reviews. As a female singer I have a 'non-conventional' voice profile of naturally strong low-mid range around 200-300 KHz with noticeable resonance, while also having a brighter upper-frequency ring around 6K-7K. Many less expensive microphones tend to either make the low end feel muddy or emphasize the higher resonance too aggressively, making the recording sound harsh. The SM4 does a great job preserving the warmth and depth while keeping clarity and presence. For the price range, I think the value is excellent. I am sure higher-end microphones can provide even more refinement, but this microphone already captures a professional vocal character without requiring a huge investment. Another thing I really appreciate is the flexibility. When I am recording demos or ideas only, I can even hold it like a stage microphone (without touching the capsule area, of course) and record naturally without noticeable handling noise or distracting background artifacts. Compared with some consumer microphones I have used before, which pick up every movement and room noise, this feels much more controlled. I have been carrying it around in the case it comes with and it is durable and consistent so far. For home studio singers who want to record serious releases, demos, vocals, or songwriting ideas at home, especially singers with a warmer or more resonant voice, this microphone is an excellent choice. I have included a clip of my released song using SM4.

A Steal of a Microphone at this Price!
Wanted a relatively inexpensive mic for quick auditions and one-off projects that I could set up in front of the PC/laptop. While the SM4 isn't going to touch the transparency and natural richness of the expensive German mic in my VO both, let's discover what it can do. First, it's all XLR, which means you'll need an IO to get it via USB into your PC/Mac. The package comes with a shockmount and cute little windscreen. Get the package - any mic this caliber that comes with a shockmount for 3 bills is a danged steal! The windscreen is OK if you don't move a lot of air or pop your P's. I went with an aftermarket beast that actually fits over the whole mic, blocks some off-axis noise, yet is still wonderfully transparent. How does it sound? With a little EQ and maybe some final processing, you'll be VERY pleased with the sound you get for what you paid! I've got this one pre-amp'd through a Great River ME-INV which gives it all the boost it needs and provides its needed phantom power. I gave a little more presence in the mid and upper ranges which livens it up to my liking. Careful with the low end because it can get a little muddy/boomy with lower frequency boosts. I love Shure mics, been using them all my 40+ year career from SM58's live, to the SM7 for broadcast tracking into a laptop and now the SM4. If you're looking for a great vocal mic for podcasting, improving the sound of your VO work, and getting great value for this kind of price point, you can't go wrong with the SM4. Put this in a quiet booth-type setting, take some time with setting the EQ, and you've got a mic worth easily twice the price.

Quality Microphone
The mic is built tough as you would expect from Shure. It is very heavy. Compared to other condenser mics, I find it definitely cuts down on ambient noise on instruments, vocals and against guitar amplifiers. It articulates well, but value for money, I am not sure. Time will tell. The only quirk I've found is in the accessories, not the mic itself. The pop filter is magnetic, which is fine, but the material for the screen is really flimsy and I can see it braking. I could see a vocalist hitting their nose into it and making a wrinkle in the material. The case included in the kit I received has the logo printed upside down. Compared to every photo of this case, this is an anomaly. I even contacted Shure and they were puzzled. Otherwise everything works as expected.

Perfect Mic for Home Studios!
This kit is everything I wanted for my home studio! The sound quality is crystal clear, catching every detail of my voice without any distortion, even on louder takes. The all-metal build feels sturdy, and the shock mount and magnetic pop filter are great bonuses. Setup with my audio interface was super easy, and I was recording within minutes. For anyone into podcasts or vocals, this mic is a total game-changer! Worth every penny!

Sublime!
Wow! Just, wow! I used to use an Audio Technica AT2020 for recording at home through my interface, but I purchased a Positive Grid Spark Live for use as an at home and out-and-about amp (4 inputs for various instruments, including a mic input). I bought a Sennheiser E935 dynamic mic as a sort of all-purpose mic, and it performed admirably. Really is a brilliant dynamic, which I would HIGHLY recommend. But - something was missing from my home recordings. A near silent room, so no real issues with background noise. Untreated room, but it's small and I thought I'd see what a good condenser would sound like, that had a nice cardioid pattern and noise rejection. Now, only issue is the Spark Live does not include phantom power, but a little battery powered Xvive P1 phantom power pack took care of that. Anyway, I have a song I'm currently working on and thought I'd re-record a small section (guitar and vocals) to hear what I was missing out on with a condenser mic - A LOT, as it turns out. I fully realise that condensers are much more sensitive than dynamics and pick up a lot more detail, however, the Sennheiser E935 is a cracking mic and I had no real complaints with what I was getting out of it. Superb live mic and, in my honest opinion, better than the Shure SM58 in terms of clarity, detail and off-axis sound rejection. In other words, the perfect vocal mic....... Or so I thought. Plugged in the Shure SM4 and immediately I remembered what I loved about condenser mics! The sparkle, the full dynamic range of the acoustic guitar, the lush, smoooooth, controlled vocals AND, in the case of the SM4, superb off-axis noise rejection and reduced proximity effect. I am by no means even close to an expert in microphone technology, but what Shure have accomplished here is nothing short of remarkable! The sound for vocals and guitars is so, so nice - airy, bright, detailed (not sharp and trebly) but also very controlled across the frequencies. Very clean, very clear and very controlled. The off-axis noise rejection and proximity effect reduction are unexplainable to me (dual-diaphragm design, maybe?). Anyway, to sum up. It's the perfect microphone for a home studio, at least for my preferences and taste. Well done Shure! Oh and also, well done Sennheiser! The E935 from Sennheiser still has a place in certain scenarios, and is a sublime microphone, but for studio recording or vocals and most instruments I play, the SM4 is now my go to!
