Top Gun - [DVD] [1986]

I did go and see this film when it first came out and after watching the new film I had to get the original and it's just as thrilling as the new top gun film and it was good value for money

This is a review of the 2009 All Region Special Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment. It comes with plenty of extras, and provides a beautifully clear, colourful edition of this classic 1986 Tom Cruise vehicle.I confess that neither my husband nor I had ever seen this original ‘Top Gun’ film. Despite being massive film buffs and these days, Tom Cruise fans, it has remained a gap in our collection. ‘Despite’ might perhaps read ‘Because’ in fact. We are not, never have been, keen on ‘yoof’ or ‘Groupie’ films. And ‘Top Gun’ did have that reputation back in the day, an adrenaline and aviation spirit-fuelled star vehicle, to flaunt Cruise’s boyish good looks, white teeth and sex appeal. Not our bag! However, with the new second film drawing considerable plaudits, and Cruise now showing genuine long term star power, we purchased and watched it with an open mind.It is fair to say that our original expectations were pretty accurately born out. Cruise has never looked better from a physical point of view: a lean, mean flying machine, who also devotes a little time to pursuing Kelly McGillis (who is excellent). Val Kilmer has never been haughtier ~ a taught, focussed, rather grim performance. Some of the old hands, including Tom Skerritt and Michael Ironside, work hard in stalwart support as senior trainers and officers. It is pretty macho; pretty adrenaline-fuelled; pretty light on any real script to chew on.But then, this is what we expected. “It’s about the flying, stupid!” The stunts and flying sequences are superb, really well realised (this was before CGI could loop your loop for you at the drop of a pixel) and the fairly short film length, 110 minutes, allows for plenty of excitement and jeopardy, without the entire thing becoming repetitive and same-y. The US Navy provided considerable assistance, putting several F-14s from their iconic VF-51 Fighter Squadron, the ‘Screaming Eagles’, plus the Aircraft Carrier, the USS ‘Enterprise’, at the disposal of the film makers; this helps create considerable authenticity in the technical areas of the film.The music for the film is of considerable interest. The soundtrack went 9xPlatinum (that is 9 million sold), and the song "Take My Breath Away”, used during the film but not the title track, won the music OSCAR and Golden Globe.Cruise of course, has gone on to many better things. Personally, we rate ‘Collateral’, his darkly comic 2004 Neo-Noir for Michael Mann, as his best work. But there is plenty to choose from, from his ‘Mission Impossible’ films to ‘Born on the Fourth of July’(1989). Lt Pete "Maverick" Mitchell really grew up in the end.So, not high art, not even high cinematic art, but very well done, nicely entertaining and a fascinating stepping stone in Cruise’s career that is well worth catching up on, if you don’t know it. 4 fast-accelerating Stars.

Its a oldie to some but still a well made film.

One of the least 'mature' military movies ever. But that's definitely part of its charm. Well filmed, great music, guys in their prime, suspenseful action. Surprisingly, the Dolby ATMOS soundtrack didn't translate well on my SONOS Arc + Sub. Hence the 4 stars.

Der Film ist ja bekannt. Aber was da an Bild und Ton rausgeholt wurde , ist enorm. Ich habe die 4k Version. Für Fans sehr zu empfehlen.
