My favourite ‘regular’ rye whiskey!
You can spend an inordinate amount of money on rye whiskies, but I like that this one offers a lot of the sourness and flavour that is distinctive from bourbon, but it comes at a reasonable price too.The bottle is nice and while it doesn’t appear as fancy as some of the other pricier options, it doesn’t look cheap. What’s more important though is that it doesn’t taste cheap. This is my ‘go-to’ rye whiskey and there is no sign of that changing despite of all the others I continue to try!

A bit of a shocker to be honest....
I bought this when it went on offer for £24 just to try a JD Rye whiskey, wasn't expecting all that from it but for that price I wasn't really that worried if I didn't like it. Well this has certainly changed my mind about Jack Daniels (well this and their single barrel offerings), it's a great rye, has more in common with a Bourbon than a rye though, has some deep chocolate notes on the nose plus is not too heavily spiced like I was expecting either. For the money I paid I'm happy with it, I have a pour of it at least once a week like when I suddenly remember that I actually have it and dig it out from the back of the bar (I do like to hide my goodies, it makes for a nice surprise when I 'rediscover' it again, lol). The only problem I do have with it is that the Mrs likes it too (yet another reason for hiding it, lol) and she is not a whiskey drinker at all, but as soon as I put my glencairn down she's picking it up and knocking it back which goes to show just how easy drinking it is, so if you do buy a bottle just tell the Mrs it's horrible and the only reason you're drinking it is to get rid of it sooner (helpful to pull some "I've just been poisoned" faces whilst drinking) and hopefully she'll leave you alone to saviour the experience - I just wish that I had done that myself in the first place, lol.

Good rye for mixing
I love a rye-based cocktail, scubas a Manhattan or a Sazerac. Jack Daniel's rye has the right peppery spice to give the flavour you want, with a decent finish and plenty of warmth on the tongue. The only issue is that despite the 70% rye in the mash bill, it still has quite a harsh spirit burn on first sip; I guess it has only been aged three years or so. I would have expected the 30% corn/barley mix in the rest of the mash bill would have rounded out the rye more, but I expect this is down to the ageing. Compared to a more expensive rye, such as Rittenhouse or High West, this shows its limits, but for the price, they have produced a very decent rye that makes a very good drink indeed.

I don't like whiskey
I have been drinking this for years, despite my not liking whiskeys. I do enjoy my dark rums. But when it comes to whiskey I stick to the JD Apple and Honey, the lightweight (not a real whiskey) variety.Yet the Rye has always reminded my of Christmas. Even though I never drank whisky at Christmas. This has puzzled me for as long as I've been drinking it. Finally it hit me... I wasn't paying attention, my mind was elsewhere. The after taste... Ruby Port. The stuff I've been putting in my Christmas cakes for years. Problem solved. So to those that are unsure. If you like your Christmas cake soaked with a Ruby Port. You might want to give this a try.
