Fills in the gaps
I have been using Duolingo for the last year to prepare for a trip to Japan coming up this April. Duolingo is great because it keeps you engaged but it really doesn't teach you anything. I did know a little bit of Japanese from a class I took in college but once I got past the basics in Duolingo, I was lost with the use of the particles and grammar. This book is perfect to fill in those gaps. Duolingo is great for vocabulary but when you start getting deeper into sentence structures and conjugation, it doesn't help. This book is laid out well and is easy to read and understand. Now the grammar rules make sense and my understanding is increasing exponentially. Highly recommended.

Like A Textbook ッ
I'm just an average person trying to learn Japanese. I was printing pages from my computer to help me learn the characters and some words, but I'm going to buy these textbooks from now on. It's so much easier to have everything broken down with hiragana, romaji, kanji, etc., that you can always re-read. The book is larger than I expected, and there's so many pages full of sentences you'll need in everyday life. Personally, I'd pair it with the 840 word book. The font is easy to read, and there's tons of space to practice your writing skills. It's very straightforward but user-friendly. I'm still on chapter 1, but I'll have to make an update when I totally finish it :) You can tell the author really put themselves in the shoes of someone starting from scratch. Oh, and don't forget the QR code to access the quizlet online! There's flash cards and other tools. Again, very pleased :)

Great for learning Japanese Grammar
This is great book on Japanese grammar. It taught me things I never learned on Duolingo. It goes through real life examples of grammar concepts and explains in a clear and simple way, without sounding like you are in elementary school. The author briefly mentions other books that he wrote about vocabulary and writing practice.

Thorough and very clear learning tool
I am brand new to Japanese so this book was immensely helpful in explaining sentence structure, grammar, and some of the linguistic tips for learning this language. It has clear instruction and guides for how to think about learning the language as a beginner and provides references and other resources for people who need more support. The practice sections for writing are super helpful and I appreciate the breakdown of the sentences in multiple different ways to try and help grasp language, vocab, and grammar all at once.

Excellent Learning Material
This book is first class, particularly when linked to the online application for vocabulary and grammar learning. The learning material is very well thought through and very clear, particularly impressive given the difficulty of the subject matter.
