Moore and Wright MAW4003 Engineers Squares

A superficially a nicely made square that unfortunately isn't.
This looked like a nicely made engineers square when I opened the package, however having several other "Squares" in the past I immediately wanted to ensure that it was indeed square. I found a straight edge and struck a line then turned the square over and compared the same edge. There was a gap difference comparing the bottom and top of the line, this should look the same if the square was 90 degrees. In conjunction with this I noticed that the block part of the square wasn't flat and rocked back and forth on a pivot point in the area of the inside angle of the square, meaning the measurement got worse if you held against the edge at a different point along the square. It had one job to do and failed superbly.I have returned the square for a refund.

Left: my other, cheap square. Right: the M&W square in question
This square wasn't square at all. It did fail the parallels test. In the attached picture I show the results. On the left I show the results with my cheap square. Both lines are superimposed. On the right, the results with the M&W in question; there is a clearly visible angle between the two lines. Just to make it clear, the flat sheet of metal that I used for the test had a verified straight edge.Obviously I was seriously disappointed with this item, and can only think that it came from defective stock. So do check yours right after you buy it!It was returned to the seller, who also paid for the return postage, no quibbles, so there's a positive thing.
