Paying For Protection: Scotchgard Fabric and Upholstery Protector
I have used Scotchgard Fabric and Upholstery Protector for over 2 decades on my fabrics and that has made them easier to keep clean. I have used this product mostly on coats, pillows and furniture. I will usually apply at least 2 thin coats of Scotchgard after cleaning my jackets or indoor fabrics. I found that it helps block most stains from permanently discoloring the fabric. I just plop the piece in the washer and the stain is usually gone. Reapply the Protector and I am good to go again. Obviously this product has its limitations especially with real greasy gritty oil; that comes from an automobile, for instance. Oil-based products seem to soak in to the fabric more than the Scotch- gard can protect. What I found was that with the Scotchgard it protected most of the fabric but there was a tell-tale sign of the substance left on the jacket. I have used this product on my wool, cotton and 'dry clean only' fabrics without any issues or any problems. As is suggested with any spray-on product first test a small portion of the fabric in an area not usually seen, that you wish to protect. I have not used it on silk as of yet. Light liquids spills have been repelled and provided me with an easy blotting cleanup. If something did appear to stain the fabric after cleanup it seemed to come out easily in the wash. I consider this product a light protectorate against most non-oily substances. Don't expect it to block all nasty substances that earth and man can throw at it. Yet, for most situations it works just terrific for me. If possible you should apply this product outside. The fumes can be overpowering when applying even to a small object. The smell can permeate two to three large rooms for up to an hour after application so be careful with application sites. Garages are a good source, or a room that can be closed off until the scent subsides but when possible there should be plenty of fresh air available. Because of the positive long term usage every year, for decades, of this product I gave it 5 stars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are suggested usages as listed by manufacturer: 'Suit Jackets, Curtains, Shirts, Silk Ties, Fabric Sofas & Chairs, Dress & Pant Suits, Chair Cushions, Slip Covers, Caps, Blouses, Throw Pillows, and Table Linens.'

Hard to stop once you start using it
This product is your best friend for the rainy season. I originally bought this for waterproofing a coat that lost the waterproof layer after years of use in all kinds of weather. When the bottle arrived I started waterproofing the coat. And shoes. And boots. And backpacks. Pretty much everything that needed to be waterproofed in the house got a layer of this product on and it was magic!! When water drops on you, it will simply fall down, off the piece of clothing or fabric furniture it fell on. The microscopic silicon cells contained in the spray block anything from wetting or dirtying whatever surface you apply it on, making your stuff last way longer and saving you a lot of money and time in cleaning / laundry. In order to apply the product, you want to be (possibly outside of your house) but if this doesn't work, you can always be in a large room. All you have to do is point the spray towards the item you want to waterproof and start spraying while keeping the bottle vertical and a bit far from the surface you are coating. Initially, there will be a strong smell coming from the liquid spray, but don't panic. Just let the product dry and the odor will be completely gone from your clothes. If you want to make really sure that nothing gets through, you can always double treat your fabric. Just way a few hours for the initial layer to dry and then apply a second one that will keep all the water and spills away from the item. The bottle is enough for multiple items. In my case some of them were even pretty big and the liquid was enough to use on a large coat, a jacket, two pairs of shoes and a backpack (all double layered) and there was still material left over for another session. I strongly suggest this, as it's going to keep you dry through the winter.

This stuff works! I have white furniture in my tv room and 2 dogs :)
This stuff works, 2 pack is best as I used for various pieces of furniture and I spray sides and all over. 2 couches in high use tv room various pillows and dining room chairs and kitchen fabric bench Dries fast. Once on it allows me to get any little stain or smudge from dogs out instantly. Liquids roll off I purchased twice to reapply and for dining room chairs as they arrived later. Prefer to buy online as its one of those things you will forget to look for in store if you aren't going there to purposely buy it, free shipping prime Reason for 4 stars--- I worry about the smell of this when applying, I mean I'm like uh am I gonna get lung cancer? I now cover my face and apply as careful as I can and leave room. It is strong, doesn't burn eyes or chest just makes me wonder is all Once applied and it isn't in air and dries quick you won't even notice or smell it at all. It's only when applying. Get a scarf or bandana. I just don't want to know what's in it as I must have it-my couches are off white and a fabric that doesn't allow for easy wiping like a fake suede or microfiber

Posted photos of my little experiment - Impressive stuff!
I was very curious as to what sort of results to expect from this product (bought it for our white sofa since the retailer's "protection plan" was a joke), so I decided to do a little experiment and apply red wine to a treated and untreated portion of material (photos added for you to see). The spill on the Scotchgarded portion beaded up while the unprotected portion soaked the wine up right away. I let it sit for a few minutes and eventually the wine did absorb into the material. When I tried to remove the stain from both sections (using only water), the red wine actually came out of the treated side while the untreated side appeared to be stained. The results were very impressive! I'm on the "what else can I apply this to?" bandwagon now. Amount needed - I treated an extra large sofa and a small fully upholstered chair with two coats each and used 4.5 cans (10 oz size). Found that using painters tape to mark the untreated areas helped me remember where I had or had not spayed since I couldn't really see a significant change in the fabric's appearance and when I would look away to open my second can of Scotchgard I would lose my place. Smell. If you've ever stepped into a small nail salon that applies acrylic nails, that's about what this stuff smells like to me. Since I currently live in a high rise, I was concerned about the ventilation requirements since I can only open a patio door and crack a window. I applied one coat to my sofa, got caught up on a phone call and didn't leave the room, causing a slight headache (totally my fault). When it came time for the second coat, I was sure to go to a different room after spraying the item and had no issues whatsoever. Just sharing my mistake in case anyone else without outdoor space is thinking of using this product - it's very possible and very much worth doing, but just be sure to leave the area until the odor dissipates.

Kept Our Rental Clean
We own five rentals so last year when we bought and furnished a new one we purchased 5 cans of the spray. I applied it to a corduroy Sofa Loveseat and kitchen and dining room chairs; honestly I didn't know what to expect, but I followed the directions used four cans and off it went for a six month rental. I just got access to the home and although the unit was fairly dirty there e=were no stains or wear marks anywhere on any of the furniture; these were not the cleanest of people and I spent a lot of time cleaning the home. The best part of it was that I vacuumed the upholstery and it all came back looking like new. We have added another home and newly furnished it I ordered another five cans and coated a loveseat sofa chair kitchen chairs (4) dining room chairs (4) and two bar stools and I still have a can left. I also found out that by coating the outdoor furniture wicker with cushions that not a bit of mildew built up during the 6 month period; we are hoping for the same results this year and I will update this post after this season. It is easy to apply make sure it is well ventilated and wear a mask if you can. I hope you are as happy with the product as I am. UPDATE: A little over a year ago we treated the aforementioned furniture a quick vacuum and a light refresher coat and they look like new; my thoughts are the same I think this is a great product.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - IT WILL RUIN YOUR FABRIC AND YOU WILL NOT GET HELP FROM THE 3M.
This is chat message - and the response doesn't have to be a specialist on fabric which your company professes to know. If there's a problem with your product - the answer is solve your problem by contacting the manufacturer of the chair. That seems to be narrative of 3M, a large corporation. You could have hired an elementary student to give that answer. I bought your product from Amazon.com - I'll copy and paste this 3M Support response. jose Guerrero: Initial Question/Comment: I applied the Scotch Guard fabric cleaner to remove stains on my 4 fabric chair. The product removed the stains. However, becomes hardened and rough. The seat used to be soft as to be expected from a fabric. I water sponged the chair with no change. Is there anything I can do bring back the softness of the fabric? System: Welcome jose Guerrero! Thank you for contacting 3M. You are important to us. A 3M Scotchgard Support Representative will be right with you. System: Richard H has joined this session! System: Connected with Richard H. Your reference number for this chat session is 152306. Richard H: Thank you for contacting 3M where we apply Science to Life, my name is Richard. I see you are having issues with the Scotchgard Fabric Cleaner. jose Guerrero: Yes Richard H: Do you know what exactly the fabric is of the "4 fabric chair"? Is it a microsuede? jose Guerrero: Looking at the label. It says the fabric consists of acrylic 50%, cotton 30% and polyster 20% Richard H: Did you do a color fast test of the fabric? How did you apply the product? jose Guerrero: I sprayed the product into the fabric and then used a damp cloth to spread evenly the product and to dry the fabric. Richard H: Did you saturate the fabric where the stain was? jose Guerrero: I did a little bit but not too much. I was afraid the product will go deeper into the foam underneath. In any event the stains disappeared after light saturation of the stained areas. Richard H: To remove the Scotchgard, one will have to clean the material according to the material's cleaning instructions. It is best to reach back to the manufacturer of the chair to do that. jose Guerrero: It sounds like passing the buck after the questions. You could have started with don't ask me ask the chair manufacturer. How about a 50 year old chair? jose Guerrero: Is there a way to send me a copy of the chat by email jose Guerrero: I could have googled for the answer. Do you want me to forward you by email the solution from google search? Richard H: The 50 year old chair, do you know what the fabric is of that chair? Richard H: We do not send the discussions, I am sorry per company policy. jose Guerrero: I don't think you're reading the chats. I already gave the you what the fabric of the chair Richard H: If what you gave me is the composite of the chair, then, you also did not answer me if you did a color fast test in an inconspicuous area nor did you respond to me if it were a microsuede. jose Guerrero: what the fabric is of that chair? - this was your odd question recently which was already answered earlier jose Guerrero: It is not a microsuede and I did a color fast test Richard H: We suggest to do a color fast test in an inconspicuous area of the fabric to see if the color is transferred and if there is a change in the consistency of the fabric. jose Guerrero: I did all that in the beginning on small side of the chair Richard H: To remove the scotchgard; which it appears is now the desire to do, To remove Scotchgard from fabric, carpeting, leather, etc., you need to clean the material according to the material's cleaning instructions. If the customer does not know the cleaning instructions for the item with the Scotchgard on it, they need to check with their item's manufacturer. jose Guerrero: You are repeating your answers which I already my response. Please read the chats Richard H: I am repeating yes, because at this point, it seems one would need to go back to the manufacturer to further identify the proper way to clean the fabric. The Scotchgard should be able to be removed according to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.

no issue with staining at all
Bought these after we moved and re-upholstered the chairs to my grandparents' dining room table. Wanted to protect them long term. So far, after a few month, we have had no issue with staining at all. So, it seems to be working great!

Good purchase
Very useful in keeping my sofa clean. Good quality product. It has a paint like chemical smell for a few hours, then you don't feel it at all. Repels liquid spills.

Good stain and water protection
I have been using this product for years. Spray it twice a year on your upholstery and it will basically repell liquid stains from all your fabrics. It has a strong smell that subsides after a few hours in a ventilated room. Very good quality and reliable product. Five stars

Works very well
We have a 3 seater sofa with a light coloured fabric upholstery and were concerned that it would get dirty soon and hence decided to buy a can of the 3M fabric protector. Once the product arrived, I decided to apply the spray on the sofa. One has to cover all non-sprayable parts of the sofa (for example wooden armrests and legs) etc, as the spray can leave stains on them that are difficult to remove. I generously applied multiple coatings of the spray and left the same to dry. Initially, the fabric felt a bit rough, but after using the sofa for a couple of days, the texture of the fabric seemed to be back to normal. Some months later, I was having packing a container of fish curry and used the sofa to hold it. Unfortunately, I managed to spill a significant amount of the gravy on to the sofa and the cushions. I was able to immediately open the cushion cover, but the only thing I could do with the sofa was to wipe it with a damp cloth. Once it dried, we found absolutely no signs of the spilled curry. Hats off the 3M fabric protector!

A must for canvas bags and fabric sofas.
I bought this product for the first time after coming across a lady on YouTube recommending it. I used it on my canvas bag and fabric sofa; and I am glad I did. Some hot chocolate accidentally spilled onto my sofa recently and I was able to clean it off more easily than I imagine if I hadnโt applied this product. A good product.
