could it fit in a gladius sword

From what I've seen of gladius swords, I would have to say that it would be a little tight. By bending the leather folds outward and loosening the string it should hold a gladius sheath. Otherwise it may not allow for the bare sword to be released. Hope that's not too late to help.

Does not tighten down well on rapier scabbard even when holes were overlapped. Is it intended to be loose? Suggestion for tightening?

I think these are best for broadswords, cutlass and even sabers but not for rapiers. They are just too thin. You may have to alter it a bit, maybe glue a lining of thick fabric on the inside.

I doubt this will hold nylon sheathes - am I wrong?

I don't see why not. The leather frog ties around the sheath no matter what material it is made from. It shouldn't slip through.

Fantastic I love it! Even used with a narrow blade.

Fantastic quality!! This is the real deal. I even managed to use it with a very narrow rapier. (Unlace it & re-lace with the holes overlapping. Wrap the lace a couple times around the scabbard above & below it.) Love this.
