Finally ā The Updated Instinct Iāve Been Waiting For! (Garmin Instinct 3 50mm AMOLED ā Neotropic)
Iāve been rocking the original Tactical Instinct for many years now, and that beast has been absolutely bulletproof ā still going strong after all this time, which is rare for any smartwatch. But Iāve been itching for an update, especially one with a vibrant screen, and the Garmin Instinct 3 50mm AMOLED in Neotropic finally delivers. This thing is a massive step up while keeping that rugged Instinct DNA I love. The 1.3-inch AMOLED display is gorgeous ā bright, colorful, and super easy to read even in direct sunlight or low light. Itās a huge improvement over the old monochrome screen without sacrificing too much battery life (Iām getting solid multi-week usage in smartwatch mode). The health and training features are next-level: ⢠Advanced wrist-based heart rate monitoring thatās accurate during workouts and all-day tracking. ⢠Pulse Ox (blood oxygen) for around-the-clock monitoring ā great for sleep insights and altitude adventures. ⢠Enhanced sleep tracking, stress monitoring, Body Battery energy levels, and HRV status. ⢠Tons of built-in sports apps, adaptive training plans via Garmin Coach, daily suggested workouts, and detailed metrics for running, cycling, HIIT, and more outdoor activities. Plus, it keeps all the tough stuff: military-grade durability, multi-band GPS, built-in LED flashlight (super handy), metal-reinforced bezel, and that classic Instinct toughness. The Neotropic colorway looks sharp too ā that vibrant green/twilight combo stands out without being flashy. The watch itself is outstanding ā highly recommended if youāre coming from an older Instinct like I am. The only downside? Amazonās delivery. It took 12 days to arrive, which feels excessive in 2026. Tracking showed it bouncing from the West Coast (Cali) to the East Coast (Maryland) before finally landing in Florida. Iāve noticed this happening more often with Prime orders lately ā maybe itās just bad luck, but it was frustrating. Not the watchās fault, though! If youāre after a rugged, feature-packed update to the Instinct series with that beautiful AMOLED screen, this is it. Worth every penny. š I might upload some pics later if I can do it justice!

Finally Found the Perfect Apple Watch & WHOOP Replacement
After three years of wearing a WHOOP and dealing with my Apple Watch's frustrating daily charging routine, I decided to try the Garmin Instinct 3 Solar. Three weeks in, and I'm genuinely impressed. Battery Life is a Game-Changer The Garmin came out of the box with 38 days of battery life. Let that sink in ā 38 DAYS compared to my Apple Watch that needed charging every single night. The solar charging feature means I may go even longer between charges depending on sun exposure. This alone makes it worth the switch. Accurate Health Tracking I was skeptical about whether the Garmin could match my WHOOP's data accuracy, but I've been wearing both side-by-side to compare. The sleep tracking, heart rate, and HRV readings from the Garmin have been remarkably consistent with the WHOOP. For anyone considering dropping their WHOOP subscription, the Garmin delivers comparable metrics without the monthly fee. Rugged Design The 50mm size with metal reinforcement feels solid and durable ā this is built for the outdoors. It's a significant departure from the sleek Apple Watch aesthetic, but if you prioritize function over fashion, you'll appreciate the rugged construction. Overall Impression Three weeks in, I'm very pleased with this purchase. The combination of incredible battery life and accurate health metrics makes the Instinct 3 an excellent choice for anyone tired of constantly charging their smartwatch or paying for WHOOP subscriptions.

Best MIP watch. Compared with Instinct 2, Coros Pace 3, Suunto 9 Peak Pro & Vertical
My priorities for a smart watch: 1) long battery life that I can use to track week-long backpacking trips. 2) a display that I can ALWAYS read. I don't like waiting for a display to light up; I don't need colors. 3) something that doesn't need to be charged often so I can sleep with it for my morning alarm and sleep tracking. My previous watch was an Amazfit Bip S (with a MIP display). It recently died after 4 years of use. I was looking for more to replace it. I compared 5 watches with MIP displays: Garmin Instinct 3 Solar and 2 Solar, Coros Pace 3, Suunto Vertical and 9 Peak Pro. The Garmin Instinct 3 was noticeably better than the Instinct 2: a crisper and more reflective display, better solar charging, snappier response (I noticed a little bit of lag switching screens sometimes), and that torch! Feature-wise and software, they looked identical. I think it wouldn't be worth upgrading from the Instinct 2, but since I was replacing a watch, the improvements in the Instinct 3 are worth the price difference. I wasn't going to go cheap if either Garmin was better than the others. (The Fenix is beyond what I want to spend.) The Instinct (both 2 and 3) is a cut above the Coros or Suunto in several ways: 1) while the display is smaller, it had a more reflective display that was easier to read in any light. Both 2 and 3 are more reflective than the others actually. (See attached photo.) 2) while the Garmin watch faces are not as pretty or even in color, almost all of the display fields on the watch face can be customized. I spent a while looking for watch faces for the Suunto and Coros with the fields I want and never found the "perfect" one, but with the Instincts, I could just select the data I want and place them on the screen. 3) the activity data screens are also very customizable with lots of options to choose from. I couldn't do this as well with the Coros and Suunto. I didn't realize how much I appreciated having customized fields and screens for hiking vs biking vs running until I could. 4) solid battery life, solar charging 5) thoughtful/useful features: lap stat announcements to your BT headset, shortcut to power saving mode, unusual tracking modes like expedition and area calc, double function of each button - short vs long press, a double-tap shortcut for the torch Otherwise, all five watches had similar features: activity tracking galore, sleep tracking, alarms and timers, stopwatch, compass, altimeter, barometer, etc. 2nd place: the Coros was the most visually appealing of the set. The Instincts have that rugged chunky look and a smaller monochrome display, while the Coros was sleek with an attractive display (for MIP). Although they were all "45mm" watches, the Coros had a lower profile on my wrist, and through a trick of design, it looked like it had a smaller bezel. (It wasn't.) Data fields were displayed in BIG readable fonts during activities. The scroll wheel and two buttons was probably the most fun interface to use. Scrolling and zooming is quite nice with a scroll wheel. The Suunto Vertical is very similar to the 9 Peak Pro. I got my hands on both. I don't think it is worth the 2x price difference so I only compared the 9 Peak Pro with the others.

Solid Tactical Watch With Great Features ā Just Protect the Screen
The Garmin Instinct 3 Tactical Edition is an excellent watch overall. It delivers everything youād expect from a rugged, outdoor-focused Garmin device ā reliable GPS, strong battery life, tactical features, customizable profiles, and a lightweight, comfortable design that disappears on the wrist even during long workdays or workouts. Performance-wise, itās fast, accurate, and consistent. The solar charging capability is a great bonus if you spend a lot of time outside, and the interface is easy to navigate once you get used to Garminās button layout. For fitness, job-site use, and daily wear, itās genuinely a powerhouse. The only area worth calling out is the display. While Garmin markets the durability, the lens can scratch more easily than expected. Itās not a dealbreaker, but itās definitely something to be aware of. I would strongly recommend pairing the watch with a quality screen protector right away to avoid unnecessary marks and keep the display looking new. Aside from that, this is a fantastic watch with impressive functionality and rugged performance. If you take the simple precaution of adding a screen protector, the Instinct 3 Tactical becomes a truly reliable and long-lasting companion for both work and training.

Don't need maps or ECG? Don't need golf data? Buy this Garmin!
First off, apologies for some photos being a little blurry. I was battling my phones camera, but some are pretty good. Please know the display is extremely clear and crisp with vibrant colors and fun transitions from various screens. YouTube has plenty of reviews, but I paid my own money for all my Garmin watches. Tactix 7 Pro Solar, Epix Pro AMOLED, and this 50mm Instinct 3 AMOLED. I love those two others, but this Instinct 3 AMOLED called to me due to its cool factor and its build character harkining back to my former Ironman and G-Shock days, but with modern smartwatch luxuries. It just looks "cooler" to me than the smooth and sleek top tier models I also own. Additionally, I just love watches and collect a select few brands with mechanical movements among the majority. This Garmin Instinct AMOLED 50mm is extremely light weight. It's actually lighter than the heavy duty strap I show in these photos. Left in it's original offering, you may forget its on your wrist until it notifies you about your newest Amazon delivery.....maybe another watch....š I found I wanted the AMOLED screen for it's highly enjoyable bright and colorful display and I already have an MIP screen on my Tactix 7 Pro Solar. I was honest with my usage with maps and determined I basically never use them, so the lack of maps didn't matter to me, and again I already own other options. It does all the fitness tracking under the sun and has incident detection for many activities that most users would logically want to have. The LED flashlight in either mode is very usable and plenty bright. It seems to be, from memory, at least as good as my other two. It has the red/orange/green shift feature like other more expensive models and this feature is programmable for sunset and sleep timing for either color or a mix. The buttons feel quality and tactile with a felt click when interacting with them. It does not have a touch screen, but I like that. My other two do and I disable it on both. I don't use the touchscreen for anything but manipulating maps and as stated above, that's rare. This watch has no maps to move around the screen, so a touchscreen doesn't add value or cool factor for me, and the price reflects this. Any quick attach/detach 26mm watch band will fit this watch, to include any of the ones for my other two Garmins mentioned above The charger port is along the band attachment point in this model. This may seem inconsequential, but it isn't. This allows the port to be in open air in the gap from the bottom of the watch and the lugs where the band connects. This allows it to dry and not be subject to constant skin produced wetness and keeps the charging/data transfer contact from being against your skin. This results in less irritation for the wearer and longer service life of the plug port. I could go on and on, but my thumbs are getting annoyed with me typing on my phone. This is a great heavily featured Garmin for a price that seems to make sense to me. It could be your first and only Garmin for long time unless you are a watch fiend like me. If your looking to go Garmin but don't want to spend $600 plus, you need to consider this model. The solar model is likely as good with potentially endless battery life (claimed by Garmin), but it won't be as pleasant to interact with. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk!

Great watch/tracker for the active person
Coming from a Fitbit, there is a lot more data with the garmin. Fits and wears like a regular watch and very comfortable. Metrics like steps, heart rate, heart rate variability, resting heart rate etc were identical to the Fitbit. The biggest difference I found is the sleep tracking, which is very different from the Fitbit. The garmin gives you a much more descriptive detail. The Fitbit says I slept better, while the garmin states not much restorative sleep continuously regardless of what I try. I havenāt had the opportunity to see how well the solar charging is. Pros - great activity tracker Data metrics are easily readable The app is also easy to use and navigate Completely customizable watch face Battery life is great. I get roughly 2.5 weeks out of one charge. (Along with disabling notifications) Cons Tracking sleep seems off, but Iām still getting used to it so probably just a learning curve As with most smart devices, every notification imaginable is enabled by default. Iāve spent quite a bit of time disabling almost every notification. Special charging cable. Fitbit does the same thing - would like to see it be a universal type c charger!

Garmin vs Apple
I have been a dedicated long-distance runner for over a decade, with numerous full and half marathons under my belt. For years, my trusted training partner was my Apple Watch Series 8. I ran with it, trained with it, and trusted its data implicitlyāuntil a swim session caused it to fail. After getting it repaired at a local shop (since Apple does not repair them), I decided I needed something more durable and made the switch to the Garmin. I have only had the Garmin Instinct 3 for a week, but the difference is a total game-changer. I ran my usual park route, and the results were shocking. On the same 50-minute run, the Apple Watch logged 5.2 km, while the Garmin's multi-band GPS recorded a much more accurate 7.3 km. You can see the difference in the imagesāthe Garmin's tracking is spot on, while the Apple Watch's GPS shows me running off-track, which I wasn't. This massive discrepancy made me question how much my past training data might have been off. Ultimately, this experience has made me re-evaluate what I truly need in a running watch. While the Apple Watch is a fantastic piece of technology with features like ECG, noise level, and stock tracking, etc. for serious training, those are often just distractions. I have hardly used them in the past two years, realizing they were more for novelty than utility. Here are the key differentiators for me: GPS Accuracy: The Garmin's multi-band GPS is a massive leap forward, providing a level of precision that is essential for analyzing training data. Durability: The peace of mind that comes with a rugged, purpose-built device is a huge relief. I am no longer worried about my watch failing during a key training session. Function vs. Features: While I miss the ability to take hands-free calls on my watch, I have realized I don't need all the "tech" features that come with a smartwatch. The Garmin focuses on the core functions I need as an athlete. For me, the Garmin Instinct 3 has proven to be the better tool for the job. Its accuracy and durability are far more valuable to my training than any smartwatch feature.
