Too loud? "Buzzing?" Here's the fix for it.
First saw this as a decoration in an escape room. Had to get one. Very cool. Except it was noisy. And it got noisier as time went by.I finally got fed up and figured out the problem and fixed it. It was actually really simple:1) Take the batteries out for safety.2) Pull the control unit out of the jar. It's not glued, just the sides are rubberized to keep a tight fit and help keep it quiet.3) There are 3 small phillips screws on the bottom of the unit. Remove them & keep them safe4) The cap should be able to pop off. There's a slit for the butterfly wire. Make sure you run the wire through the slit and don't smash the butterfly, it seems to be pretty fragile.5) There's a circuitboard, some wires, and in the middle, a small motor with the butterfly wire coming out of it. On the butterfly wire is a white plastic thing. It's supposed to be pushed tight up against the motor. It's fallen down a bit. Push it back up tight against the motor.6) Put the cap back on, put the batteries in, test it out. If it's still making noise investigate further. If it's fixed, put the screws back in and return the unit to the jar, being careful not to damage the butterfly.(of course, I only figured this out after messing around with bits of foam because I thought it was the motor rattling against the housing, not just the little washer/stay/whatever it's called.)

Makes a great cat toy
I know its not meant as a cat toy, but that is what I had purchased it for. I saw one on a FB video (Cole and Marmalade) and decided to order it. My 4 cats love it! The action is very realistic for a toy butterfly. The blue butterfly is very vibrant and is fun to watch when it flutters around the jar. I even find myself tapping on the jar when the cats aren't around. Overall a very cool item! I'd recommend one for those of you with cats. My 15 year old cat was also playing with it which is great for her. Being older makes it challenge to get her to move around and get some exercise.

the best thing that has ever happened to my cat
I have the neediest cat on the entire planet. It's hard to get anything done around the house because she follows me EVERYWHERE. It's cute, yeah, but also incredibly annoying. Butterfly in a jar has solved this problem. It looks so real, she can't get enough. I put it on the floor and she watches it for HOURS. She wants to get it so badly, but seeing as Mr. Butterfly is stuck in his jar, she has become the most determined cat ever and you have to give her credit, she is really trying. Heck, this thing looks so real it even freaks me out sometimes. I have to remind myself it's fake. Hopefully the cat wont figure it out or I'm in trouble. :)This thing is great, though. It is a little loud, so I turn it off at night. You can hear it clanking around in the jar, but it really does look real. ANY cat would love it. My cat is 14 years old, if she is entertained with this thing, I think any cat would be! I'm sure it would make a child very happy, as well, but I don't have any of those so I can't say for sure.

Great conversation piece!
I learned about this particular item from a friend's gadget-products catalog... it was really expensive in the catalog, but luckily I found it here, in Amazon.com, at a much better price + reasonable shipping fees. Anyhow, this product really isn't a toy, it's more like a decorative conversation piece. The way the butterfly moves in the jar is highly realistic - you can't tell it's a fake butterfly unless you go up close to the jar and see the very thin wire that causes the butterfly to move. Sometimes when I look at it, it takes me back to my childhood when I used to catch real butterflies in jars to keep them as pets for a little while.Anyway, after receiving this item in the mail, I took it to work and placed the butterfly jar on my desk where my coworkers pass by to tap on the lid to make the butterfly flutter around. People who haven't seen it before ask me where I caught the butterfly at... because they've "...never seen a blue species in Hawaii". I just play along by saying that I caught it in my backyard until they make a closer inspection and realize that it's not a real butterfly after all - their reactions are often hilarious! For those of you who are looking for something to pleasantly distract you during your busy day... or maybe, a "pet" that doesn't require any care or maintenance, I would highly recommend this product to you. I think the butterfly is stunning and the whole concept of the item is just awesome!

Unique and Entertaining Gift Idea For Pretty Much Anyone!
I have bought 3 of these as gifts so far, one of the Blue Morpho, and two of the Monarch. This has been well-received all three times. People's ages don't seem to matter when it comes to the fascination factor, everyone wants to tap the glass jar and watch the butterfly flutter. They are very realistic looking, and there is a slight fluttering sound when the butterfly flaps it's wings. From a slight distance, it is difficult to see the very tiny wire that is attached to the butterfly. Up close, even when you do see the wire, it doesn't matter, it's still a lot of fun to watch. When the novelty wears off, it's still quite pretty to leave sitting out. Guests will want to tap the glass and watch the butterfly's movement, it always seems to bring a smile. If you are looking for a great gift to give, and are unsure of what to get that person would like, I think it would be hard to go wrong with the "Butterfly in a Jar."It's a bad idea to tap on the glass with a hammer.

DUR YAI!!!!
My son is 2 and LOVES "dur-yai's". If they're in a book he gets stuck on that page. If we're in a store he needs to look. I figured "what could be better than his own butterfly?" Maybe mommy and choo choo trains, but we might be neck and neck. I received the shipment, pulled it out of the packaging. It was Amazon packaging so there was just an ugly box. No demo button to undo. Just remove the battery tab and turn it on. Nice and easy. This thing did not disappoint! My son started laughing and yelling about the dur-yai, tapping and looking. He was pretty excited. The cat liked it too.The butterfly is realistic enough, especially for a toddler and cat. I don't think he'll sleep with it like he does his mommeat or choo choo train, but i think it's a nice, easy little fake pet.

Very realistic
OK so the moment you pick it up and look you can tell its fake, but the number of people that walk past my desk then double back to look again is hilarious. I was skeptical at first when I ordered this, but its well made and still on the original batteries a month or so from when I got it. Great alternative to the usual office/shelf gadgets
