Good Quality
If you are going down the route of 12V lamps then clearly you will need a means of getting it. There are two main ways of doing this. A traditional transformer or an electronic one - basically a switch mode power supply. The traditional transformer has some advantages if well made. It will last forever, has nothing electronic to go bang and if you get a proper wound isolation transformer it will ensure galvanic isolation and therefore be very, very safe. The downside is that they can be expensive and the power is always 'on.' Electronic transfomers are cheap, efficient because they only supply power when a load is detected and are usually smaller. The downside is that the won't last forever and it is possible under failure that mains power could end up on the low voltage side. However, in this modern world electronic power supplies are the norm. I bought this because I had a large amount of downlights - 36 - to power up and it was either multiple transformers or being close to the limit on the small normally packaged ones you get in most DIY stores. This transformer will do a maximum of 300W, which is more than able to cover my lighting needs - using LEDs at 4W - leaving spare capacity which will hopefully ensure it lasts a good long time. Size wise, its about the same diameter as a saucer from a cup and saucer set and about 30mm thick. Not too huge but clearly bigger than the average items you normally see. It has got air vents so it has to be mounted in space able to circulate air. Overall, I'm very happy with this solid power supply that drives my LED's well with no flickering or interference.
