Q: How effective are these against impact noise (NOT airborne noise) -> (ie: vibration soundwaves that travel through the walls from a huge door slam)

They're ear defenders, they attenuate any noise you can hear via your ears, be it from running engines, power tools or slamming doors. I wear mine in the engineroom of a ship, and experience all of the above, as well as impacts from people hammering etc, all of which is attenuated. Unless you're talking about sound transmitted directly via contact with the vibrating object, like with Skull Microphones, or those headphones that rest against your skull. They wouldn't work to reduce the volume of those. But I can't think of any reason you'd have your head in contact with a door that's being slammed.

Q: I'm looking for ear defenders that block the most noise, especially low frequency attenuation-these are the highest NNR rating 37db-are they suitable?

i have tried noise cancelling ear defenders with little effect at blocking noise unless you fire a shotgun but the 3m Peltor are probably yhe bbest iv have had.the dont block all of the noise,but reduces it alot as i use drills and percusion tools

Q: Suitable for an MRI scanner? My 10 year old son is due to have an MRI and finds the noise very distressing

These are good but I don't know what an MRI scanner sounds like. My daughter has very sensitive hearing and uses them a lot to mask all household noises but they are not so good with high frequency whining type noises as you would get from an electric sander say. They are comfortable but designed for adults so you would have to think about how well they would fit a youngster especially when laying down and may be on their side when they might be less comfortable. Ear plugs might be worth considering

Q: Are Hygiene Kits available for the Peltor X5A?

Yes there are, search X5A hygiene kit. They're expensive though. They are sold separately, not through Prime though.
