Well, I have a research background and therefore also a heavy helping of skepticism but was willing to try something to help our 15-16 year old 40 lb rescue mutt who had been showing signs of canine cognitive dysfunction over the past several weeks, and perhaps even longer without us really noticing. She paces and pants, particularly during "sundowning" hours, and at night she would wake up, pace, pant, whine, and paw frantically at her bed while turning in circles (a "nesting" behavior that she has always had but became much more pronounced and prolonged). She also started having accidents in the house, and she has always been a 100% perfectly housetrained dog. So here are the variables I changed, all in a single day: I started giving her this pill (one pill mid-morning and one pill right before bed), started adding salmon oil to her meals (twice daily), incorporated a very short down-the-block-and-back afternoon/evening walk into her regular daily routine (she has hated walks ever since we adopted her), and made a commitment to letting her out to potty more frequently. She is in very good physical health, no signs of arthritis and has maintained good muscle mass. The very first night she slept like a baby. Insert dose of heavy skepticism here. The second night she slept like a baby. So? I remain skeptical but will update if this changes. From what I can see, this has made a very big difference already. She loves the taste of the pill and takes it readily - and she is a VERY picky dog, food-wise. It has not caused any stomach upset and she has a VERY sensitive stomach. We will see... 3-month update: She's still sleeping like a baby through the night and the panting and pacing has disappeared! We have not changed the dose (she gets 2 pills daily - one in the morning and one at night right before bed). She generally seems more alert and sprightly. She doesn't even bother chewing these anymore (they're actually a bit too hard to chew) but no matter...she takes them with gusto and swallows them whole! So glad we started her on these supplements! Almost-1-year update: Our now 16-17-year-old rescue mutt is still doing well and still taking this supplement. We have since added the milk thistle tablets by the same company (the combo of SAM-e + milk thistle are basically what's in the veterinary medicine Denamarin). Our vet agrees that giving our dog these supplements is a good idea. Interestingly, she also said that SAM-e either works like magic, or doesn't work at all. So, I hope that if you are trying this, you have a dog that falls into the "SAM-e works like magic" camp because this has definitely given back our dog's quality of life, and we are thrilled for her to still be with us. Also as a disclaimer, we did have to start our dog on Galliprant (prescription osteoarthritis medicine) as well, which is not surprising given her age, so that definitely also improves her quality of life. We will keep on trucking with our geriatric pup! Final 2020 update: We lost our wonderful girl at the end of June to potential liver and/or cardiac failure. She was probably between 16.5-17 years old. Interestingly she went downhill very quickly - it was like flipping a light switch - and we took her to the emergency vet and let her keep going down the Rainbow Bridge. I do not have lab value evidence that this product worked (we decided to skip bloodwork given our dog's age and anxiety levels at the vet, and knowing that even if we were to find evidence of liver failure, there would not be much we could do) but instead watched her clinical signs carefully. In her last weeks, she was probably uncomfortable but still enjoyed eating (very much!) and was very mobile and able to potty totally normally and rested easily at night. I am thankful that her decline was so sudden and dramatic - it made it "easier" for us to make a hard decision, and she did not suffer long. I can say with certainty that this supplement improved her quality of life and she took it for a full 12 months. Good girl, doggo. Love you forever.

I have used this for 2 of my dogs, and it has worked well for both of them - one geriatric with normal aging signs, and one young diabetic, given to prevent organ damage. Great product. Use with Milk Thistle (same brand) and this combination is the same as giving Denamarin. Not nearly as expensive, and no prescription needed.

My dog takes these because she cannot tolerate Denamarin. This works really well as her other medication is hard on the liver. Her blood work shows it is working well to keep her liver function values in normal range. She also seems to like the taste of them. My vet recommended them and so do I.

My dog hated the smell and taste. And there is something really wrong with this product. My dog was rec to take this due to elevated liver enzymes most likely due to poisoning of pesticides sprayed on grass at our housing. After taking this product he started experiencing jaundice and his liver enzymes and billirubin were higher than before. The vet told me to bump up the dose so he was getting the correct amount for his size. She said suppliments wouldn't hurt. 2 weeks later the jaudice, lack of appetite, fatigue had worsened. He appeared to be in pain based on sounds he was making. He ended up HOSPITALIZED and on fluids. Upon further research, I found that the L in sameLq is licorice root extract. Not good for dogs at all. Also there is limited research of Same efficacy and safety for dogs. There was a study done on humans and rats showing that same when digested breaks down into toxins that can be extremely damaging to the liver and other organs. They have not been able to determine what a safe dose would be, if any. My baby seems more stable after stopping the samelq. We are still waiting on test results to figure out the prognosis.
