## Overview

The Spyderco Ultra Fine Benchstone is a 3" x 8" alumina ceramic sharpening stone, kiln-fired at 3000°F for exceptional hardness (Mohs 9). Designed for dry use without oils or water, it offers a large, ultra-fine surface ideal for finishing large blades, woodworking tools, and ski edges. Lightweight and portable with a suede carrying sleeve, this USA-made stone delivers professional-level edge refinement with minimal upkeep.

## Description

Spyderco's ultra-fine ceramic benchstone is flat, thin and ultra smooth for professionally finishing and sharpening wide tools like chisels, large blades, wood-working equipment, plane irons, even ski and snowboard edges. Made from Alumina Ceramic, it is manufactured in the United States using a process where a binding agent is combined with Alumina particles that are actually synthetic sapphires. The stone is shaped then kiln fired to temperature of 3000 degrees F (1649-degreesC). Alumina ceramic stones measure 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (out of 10) and don't require lubricants like oil or water for use. The ultra-fine grit stone tightens and smoothes the cutting edge's scratch pattern for an even keener, hair popping edge. The stone is thin and light enough for hand held use, taking the sharpening surface directly to larger items. We recommend when tabletop sharpening, using the stone on top of it's' suede carrying case for slip free use. To clean the stone, wash it in fresh water and scrub with a powdered abrasive cleaner and a scouring pad. Rinse and air dry.

Review: worth the money! - Ready right out of the box. Great stone for polishing and deburring, if you don't have a 3000 grit bonded stone or water stone
Review: Last Stop Before the Strop - This is an excellent stone that fits perfectly between the finest diamond stones and the very very fine preparations that are used with strops. The large surface area makes them last longer between cleaning than crock sticks, although they seem to have similar fineness. For most, this is probably as fine as they will want to go, the "tooth" that is left at the end of slow and careful use of this stone is perfect for skinning. If you want to go finer, you will have to get a strop and polishing compound.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What grit is this stone?**
A: As a disclaimer, I do proclaim this to be absolute. What I understood was that the stone, as it is ceramic is measured in microns. This stone I saw advertised as 3 micron which converts to 8,000 grit. I have included a link to share with you the conversion table. https://www.gessweincanada.com/category-s/11328.htm

**Q: How does this stone compare to Black Arkansas stone ?**
A: I suspect it is as fine or finer than a hard Arkansas stone. I love mine. I still use a leather strop for the final honing which is probably overkill based on how fine the spider stone is.

**Q: Will this stone work on my Japanese knives at 62 rockwell?**
A: I use this for my straight razor

**Q: So, I see some say it isn't perfectly flat and they use different methods coarse DMT, etc. to flatten it, so won't that "rough" it up too much?**
A: I had the same concern as you so did not use a dmt diamond to grind the ceramic flat. The many tiny hills and valleys on the ceramic surface are very apparent after sharpening a knife because the tops of the hills get dirty but the valleys do not. But even without being perfectly flat the ceramic works well. It would be nice to do a side by side test to see if flattening the ceramic gives a sharper edge or not.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Heavy use stone
*by M***R on April 14, 2024*

I sharpen knives every day. It’s not my profession, I do it as a hobby for myself, family and friends. This has become one of my most used finishing stones. Depending on what type of knife I’m sharpening I’ll use it before moving to 3K+ stones. I’ve sharpened anything from $1 store knife to maxamet. Spyderco, Chris Reeve, ZT, microtech, Custom knife factory, Shun kitchen knives to name a few. It works great with any shape or steel. I prefer to spray a light coating of diamond emulsion and work it into the stone. I never have to flatten this stone and it doesn’t get loaded like diamond resin stones.
