That's hard to answer, but go with smaller pieces. I made the mistake of buying some large items, like ring pops, and the got jammed up in the curves.

About 4-5lbs depending on side of candy, if the candy is a mixture of large, medium and small then about 3-4lbs.

Q: Can a stick be used instead of the pull string?

Yes a stick can be used. A first grader broke the Piñata.
