Nashville (Masters of Cinema) (Dual [1975]

As far as I know this film still isn't out on blu-ray but the German DVD (and yes, it does have the original English audio as one of the set up options) will more than do until then. And I'm not sure that a blu-ray release would add much, as the DVD picture and sound is fine as it is.The film itself is every bit as good as I remembered. I hadn't seen it in years when I got the DVD and was worried it might seem dated, what with all those crazy 70s fashions, but apart from Elliot Gould's kaftan and Shelly Duval's "WTF is she wearing" hot pants there were no real horrors. I'm obviously giving the stage acts a pass because ridiculous Elvis style jump suits (the awesomely pompous Haven Hamilton) are permitted on stage. The songs are all of a genre rather than a period and hold up well. To be honest, the only thing that truly dates this masterpiece is Keith Carradine's throwaway comment to the soldier at the airport, which is light years away from the obligatory "thank you for your service" mantra we hear today.

After 40 years this classic finally available on DVD and only available on amazon where I live in Ireland.This is Altmans masterpiece and the digital transfer is excellent given the films age.Amazons delivery performance was incredible - I pre-ordered on Sunday night, the day before official release and I had it on Tuesday morning in Ireland - amazing Amazon!!!

You would normally imagine that any film lasting 2hrs 40 minutes and without a central plot would not keep the interest. However, this is Robert Altman. Altman at his best. As usual the director uses character profiles instead of a plot narrative and the numerous vignettes of people in this film are remarkable. Even the smallest role is fully formed and interesting and the film just flows between these people you grow to know well.There are messages within this story which are done subtly and don't intrude and Altman's way of improvision make the whole story so very real that you believe that after the film closes those people are still somewhere getting on with there lives.A remarkable film. Well worth watch again and again.

an excellent film - but slightly dated.

Robert Altman's brilliant mosaic of American life as seen through vignettes of 24 character studies who are involved in a Nashville political rally. Touching, comic, moving and affecting. The song by Carradine "I'm Easy" won an Oscar. Julie Christie and Elliott Gould appear as themselves.

I watched this after discovering it was the initial inspiration for the TV series - but this film is a 1970's art house movie which mainly serves to illustrate that the past is a different country. There are clunky dated plot elements - for example a pointless political assassination (obviously prompted by the Kennedy Assassination). One character (the free loving hippy chick) especially shows how the film makers didn't understand the cultural revolution (and don't we all know how the current news headlines are full of 1970's ex-celebrities who mistakenly thought they could act however they wanted and not face any consequences). It all feels painfully naive especially as it thinks its being cutting edge and dangerous but only really achieves shallow and misguided. This film is a long way from the cinematic accomplishments of series like The Wire & Breaking Bad; both of which make Nashville's pretense of fly on the wall reality quite awkward to watch. On the surface it has a similar feel to True Detective - but where True Detective forces the viewer to become the (true) detective because the characters flaws and unreliability are laid bare; in Nashville all the viewer is invited to do is agree with the film makers perspective that these characters/times are flawed and wrong. I got that the point that the characters are meant to be flawed and unlikeable with shallow aspirations but they are also one-dimensional and unbelievable - instead of condemning them I simply got more frustrated with the film. In trying to portray the characters as self centered nihilists the film makers come across as reactionaries, threatened by a changing world they are unwilling to understand. Only worth watching as a time travel experiment - 1975 as it sort of looked but not actually as it was.

One of the best films ever. Maybe I'm from the old kind of film buff, every film does not have tohave big bangs going off every few mins, and chases all the time. I can't understand all the bad reviews that people said about this film

Not quite sure why it's a three disc release. The third disc has little on it & the content could have easily been put on one of the other discs. Apart from this a stunning Blu-Ray / DVD release of a wonderful masterpiece.

I vaguely remembered this movie and wanted to see it again. After watching it, I’m not real sure what I liked about it the first time around, but it was entertaining. It had a lot of well-known actors (Lily Tomlin, Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Geraldine Chaplin, etc.). It jumps around to different characters. An unusual movie.

Nashville im US-Bundesstaat Tennessee hat ca. 600.000 Einwohner und ist das Zentrum der amerikanischen Country- und Western Music. Eine der populärsten Musikgenres in den USA und gleichzeitig die Musik der "Rednecks, der Konservativen, der christlichen Fundamentalisten, der von der Wirtschaft im Stich gelassenen Unterschicht und der vielen Fernfahrer. In den Texten wird von Liebe, Familie, Kindern, Heimweh, Fernweh und Patriotismus gesungen und gefiedelt. In Downtown Nashville befinden sich zahlreiche bekannte Musik-Clubs und Bars, in den fast immer Live Musik gespielt wird. Aus der Stadt wird auch seit 1925 die berühmte Liveshow Grand Ole Opry, das älteste noch existierende Radio-Muskprogramm in den Staaten, das lange schon auch im TV übertragen wird. Wie konservativ die Zuschauer und Zuhörer dieser Show sind und waren lässt sich am Auftritt von Elvis Presley am 2. Oktober 1954 beweisen. Ihm wurde danach von den Machern der Show dringend empfohlen die Musikkarriere zu stecken und wieder Lastwagen zu fahren.Technisch verstärkt wird das dort ständig ablaufende"24 Stunden Rund um die Uhr Spektakel" mit eigenen Slogans und Werbeslogans. In Robert Altmans scheinbar purem Dokustreifen "Nashville" aus dem Jahr 1976 kommen noch zwei Varianten dazu: Es ist Wahljahr und der Politiker Hal Philip Walker (Thomas Hal Phillips) hat Chancen mit seinen poplulistischen Reden ins Weiße Haus zu kommen und es laufen die Vorbereitungen für Amerikas große 200 Jahr Feier.Dort in diesem Musikmekka dreht sich alles um den Traum ganz weit nach oben zu kommen, viele junge Musiker und Bands reisen in die Stadt, weil sie wissen, dass dort das Herz und der Schmerz Amerikas musikalischen Ausdruck erhält und der Rest des Landes mit dieser Stilrichtung vollgepumpt wird. Alles ist Schein hier, man kann Plastik nicht mehr von Fleisch und Blut auseinanderhalten, weil beides bereits eine Art Symbiose gebildet hat. In der ersten Szene des Films erlebt der Zuschauer den neuen Song des Topstars Haven Hamilton (Henry Gibson) im Tonstudio. "I pray my sons won't go to war -But if they must, they must. I share our country's motto And in God I place my trust. We may have had our ups and downs Our times of trials and fears. But we must be doin' somethin' right To last 200 years." - ein Übersong für die anstehenden Feierlichkeiten. Dabei hat der populäre Toupetträger seine Karriere zu einem lukrativen Familienunternehmen gemacht, der Sohn Bud (Dave Peel) ist gleichzeitig Manager seines berühmten Daddys. Er streitet sich auch mit den zwei singenden Ladys Connie White (Karen Black) und der privat sehr zerbrechlichen und labilen Barbara Jean (Ronee Blakely) um die Krone von Nashville. Inzwischen ist auch das Wahlkampfteam von Walker eingetroffen, der mit seinem dröhnenden Lautsprecherwagen seine nichtssagenden Phrasen an den Mann bringt. Der Wahlkampfberater John Triplette (Michael Murphy) versucht den Big Star Haven als Gouverneur zu gewinnen. Triplette findet die Musik, die hier in der Stadt gemacht wird, sehr rückständig - aber das neue anspruchsvolle Folkalbum von Bill (Allan F. Nichols), Mary (Cristina Rains) und Tom (Keith Carradine) findet er gut.Tom aus dem Trio ist ein Frauenheld aus Passion und ruft heimlich die verheiratete Gospelsängerin Linnea Reese (Lily Tomlin) an, damit ein Date zustande kommt. Zuerst ziert sich die Frau mit ihren beiden taubstummen Kindern, doch dann kommt es doch zu einem Seitensprung. Kein Wunder, denn Tom singt auf der Bühne "I'm easy" und die Verführung klappt - ihr Mann (Ned Beatty), örtlicher Wahlhelfer für den kommenden Mann im weißen Haus, ist zu beschäftigt um überhaupt was zu bemerken. Barbara Jean indessen ist nahe dem Nervenzusammenbruch, doch sie kann ihre zahlreichen Fans wie den noch jungen Vietnam Veteranen Glenn Kelly (Scott Glen) oder Kenny Frasier (David Hayward), der auch mit seinem Geigenkasten angereist ist und bei Mr. Green (Keenan Wynn) ein Zimmer genommen hat. Der hat Besuch von seiner Nichte Martha (Shelley Duvall) aus Kalifornien bekommen, doch Tante Esther liegt im Krankenhaus - im Nachbarszimmer der kränkelnden Diva Barbara Jean, die von ihrem robusten Mann (Allan Garfield) umsorgt wird.Als eher nervig entpuppt sich die aufdringliche BBC Reporterin Opal (Geraldine Chaplin), die soviele Prominente wie möglich hier interviewen will. Davon gibts ja genug. Zu einer Party draussen kommt mal kurz Elliot Gould vorbei, im angesagten Club trifft man auf die britische Schauspielerin Julie Christie und sagt mal kurz "Hallo". In diesem Geflecht von 24 Menschen, die sich in den gezeigten 5 Tagen in Nashville mal immer wieder über den Weg laufen, sind auch die jungen Gesangstalente Suellen Gay (Gwen Welles) und Winifred (Barbara Harris), die ihre Auftrittschance denn auch tatsächlich bekommen...Und Letztere zeigt dabei sogar ihr Riesentalent mit der tragischen Schlußnummer "It don't worry me" - geschrieben von Keith Carradine. Das besondere der Songs liegt auch darin, dass die meisten Schauspieler die Lieder selbst geschrieben haben und nicht nur textlich passen sie vortrefflich zum Filmgeschehen, sie lenken sogar den Fluß der Handlung und dieser scheinbar banalen Geschichten dieser zwei Dutzend Schicksale, die hier in zahlreichen Handlungssträngen chaotisch miteinander kollidieren. Doch dies scheint nur so - tatsächlich hat Altman dieses Storygeflecht sorgfältig miteinander verwoben. Politik und Unterhaltungsindustrie werden dabei ihrer Oberflächlichkeit und Unehrlichkeit völlig entlarvt. Ein Messer in die Wunde populistischer Meinungsmache sowohl im politischen Geschäft als auch in den entlarvenden Texten dieser HeileWelt Musik und machen aus dem amerikanischen Traum eine Alptraum. Für Altmans Meilenstein des Episodenfilms gabs 5 Oscar-Nominierungen, darunter die Nebendarstellerinnen Lily Tomlin und Ronee Blakely. Auch Regisseur Altman wurde nominiert und auch in der Hauptkategorie "bester Film" kam "Nashville" unter die besten Fünf. Es gab aber am Ende nur eine Auszeichnung: "I'm easy" gewann als bester Filmsong.
