Someone may have answered this, but I'm too lazy to thumb through the comments. Can anyone tell me how firm this mattress actually is?

It's so funny how one persons medium can be another's firm. I have had the mattress for 4 years and found it to be medium I weigh 180 and it's a bit squishy for me and thus I'm shopping again, worth noting it's.10 inch and on a platform bed. It does stay way cooler than my previous foam but the top which I think is intended to grip the bedding more tends to get worn and dirty super easy so buy a protector for sure.

maximum weight on twin mattress? (8" + 10")?

The 10" Twin XL, says it's suited for up to1000 lbs ... however, 300 lbs as a side sleeper, was not very comfortable. Laying on back or stomach was fine, but not the side.

I live in Hawaii without ac (70's at night) - how hot do you feel sleeping on it?

We live in Arizona! It gets hot some nights, but we have AC all the time during the hot months when it gets to about 110 degrees during the day. At night, we are in the desert and it drops to 70 to 80, but we leave the AC on. The answer to your question is, it is cool to us here in Arizona because of the AC. Have no idea about where you are in Hawaii since we have never been there. Sorry!

I'm 5'9" 250lbs and heavy in the hips. Looking at the Twin 12" mattress anyone with my same build recommend it? How is the heat retention?

6’0 235lbs here ... Summer days the bed gets annoying to be honest. I put a waterproof zippered sheet on it and weirdly it’s not uncomfortable no more with the bed sheet. Had the bed for about 8 months now I love it. Best sleep I’ve gotten in a while.
