I'm not a woman. Can I still use these or will the magnets turn off automatically?

Hahaha you can still use these...although my husband does use these and it does fall off more for him than for me

Could I write on these with a sharpie?

Absolutely. But honestly you could make your own with some magnets and craft paper.

I don't understand how these work. How does a magnet help in a paper bookmark used on paper pages?

The magnets placed in the mark ensure that it won’t fall out of the book, loosing your page. It’s just like any other book mark; you place one side of the magnet on the page your on, and the other will automatically fall on the other side of the page. The two sides will connect, holding your place.
