George Hurstwood is a respectable family man of comfortable means. But he throws it all away for the love of "Carrie" > > > > > Based on the Theodore Dreiser novel that publishers deemed "too immoral", William Wyler's "Carrie" is a powerhouse of human passions transformed into soul-withering frailties. As Carrie, the small-town girl come to Chicago, Jennifer Jones "seems to have stepped out of the pages of the book" (Time). And Laurence Olivier gives one of his finest portrayals as love-doomed Hurstwood. "Olivier has always given credit to Wyler for teaching him how to act in the movies when they did "Wuthering Heights" together, but it's in "Carrie" that he showed how much he had learned" (Pauline Kael, 5001 Nights at the Movies)...

Olivier should have got an Oscar for Carrie
Really very touching and beautifully directed film. William Wyler is a marvellous director and Laurence Olivier really should have got an Oscar for his performance. Well worth buying.....

A Deeply Moving Film
This surely is William Wyler's finest film and Hurstwood provides Laurence Olivier with one of his truly great film roles. Oddly, the film was a commercial failure when it came out in 1951. Apparently the public did not want to watch such realistic tragedy so soon after WW2. I found Hurstwood's decline from debonair 'maître d'hôtel' to a homeless tramp through his obsessive love for Carrie (Jennifer Jones excellent) truly moving. Olivier has completely mastered the art of understatement and the use of minute expression necessary for film acting. The black and white filming is perfectly suited to the subject and atmospheric. The DVD restitution is first-rate. I would also strongly recommend 'the book of the film': "Sister Carrie" by Theodore Dreiser, a masterpiece of the American Social Realism school.

Tender memories disappointed
I have such tender memories of 'Carrie' from my first youth. I remember crying and being dejected and severely tested by the emotions of it all.Not so now, though. I was so disappointed. To me William Wyler is among the five best directors ever, but 'Carrie' is not one of his shining hours. Jennifer Jones is the naïve peasant girl who, in the beginning of the 19th century, moves to big city Chicago, where she falls in love with a mature, and as it turns out very married restaurant owner, Laurence Olivier. He runs away with her and you watch them as they slide further and further down the social ladder. Until she makes up her mind to make a difference ...God knows, the very poor state that this DVD transfer is in did not help any, but I am not sure that the film itself is worth any thorough restoration. It is all very soberly and decently made, and Olivier is nothing short of brilliant, but the film is too complacent, too satisfied to be the perfect movie for a ladies' night out to ultimately make an impression. It is just not very ambitious, and today it looks very old-fashioned.

Good To See Again
Yes, I saw this film many years ago but could only remember parts of it. One of those parts was the end, I had added some scenes of my own over time, but it didn't disappoint. Well worth seeing again, I'm glad I had the opportunity to go back in time. The DVD itself was advertised as used but appeared to be as new and unopened, there was no problems with either picture or sound.
