I have a switch in the handle that powers up the suction; power-on button on top of canister. What is difference btwn yours & mine?

The switch on the canister turns power on to the vacuum. You use that for sweeping hardwood or barewood floors. The switch on the handle turns on the power vacuum head when it is attached to the power tubes to do carpets or other carpeted areas, even mattresses, some sofas, etc. It power the rotating brush and turns on the powerbrush's lights.

need the short power cord from vac to hose

I am not sure I understand your problem. The Rainbow Genuine Electric hose and handle should plug into the vacuum and its socket automatically. Then, the straight rod attachment should connect to the handle automatically even automatically to the power vac sweeper. I am not aware of any short power cord that runs from the vac to the hose. See if you can get an online schematic showing the various pieces of the vacuum and how they connect. Let me know if this clears things up for you.
