The Wisdom of the Prophet: The Sayings of Muhammad

One of the best books of hadith fit English readers.
It's simple and most the hadith if not all come from Bukhari's Adab Al Mufrad. Book of manners, tho this book isn't just on manners. I also recommend #1 Book of hadith by Mohammad Ali, #2 essential book of hadith, I forget the other 2 I left them at my dad's apt in London...

wisdom
but are these hadith from Muhammad (PBUH) or just others offering interpretation. this is a good overview but there are thousands of hadith available. so........I suggest the Qur'an from Oxford World's Classics. just go to the source.

Outstanding Book
Dr. Cleary has done a marvelous job of compiling the wisdom of the greatest man to walk on earth. Indeed, the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) was sent as a mercy to mankind and this book illustrates that so beautifully! A must read!

A good, concise introduction to Muslim thought.
The Prophet Mohammed is the founder and central human figure of a religion that has ~1.6 billion adherents (23.4% of the world's population). The revelations received by Prophet Mohammed are the basis for almost all aspects of Muslim culture. To understand the Prophet Mohammed is to understand Islam. This work is easier on the reader than attempting the Qur'an and serves as a tantalizing glimpse into the richness of the Muslim world.

great summary
I enjoyed reading the words of the prophet, peace be upon him. It would have been nice to see specific citations so that I could read more about the context of the sayings.

A Disappointing Read
Thomas Cleary is an outstanding translator of non-Western books for English-speaking peoples. I have thoroughly enjoyed many of his books. Nevertheless, this work appears to be less worthy.Basing his work on the Qur'an and Sunnah, Cleary merely quotes appropriate verses, but without comment, without depth. The Life of Muhammad is one of the most researched. His character is impeccable, his behaviors pure and remarkable. Yet, the reader misses all of this in Cleary's book.Far better is Karen Armstrong's "Muhammad A Biography of the Prophet". It is ideal for non-Muslims. Martin Lings has written "Muhammad, his life based on the earliest sources". This is ideal for Islamic believers.

Dr.Cleary’s description of the prophet at the end of his introduction is superb.
Truly a masterpiece. Especially the beautiful overview of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) character in the introduction. May God bless Dr.Cleary.

Great collection of hadith for Bukhari's al-adab al-Mufrad.
This is a collection from Hadith compiler Bukhari's book of manners. Very nice and highly recommended. Thomas Cleary did a great job here.
