An inspiring book that is a keeper!
One of Patricia Polacco's very best books, based on a true life-inspiring story. The home-schooled students I visit once a week loved it! They asked me to read it and again again. It was a borrowed book from the library so I left it there as long as I could. Then I bought a copy from Amazon for them to keep.

Misprint
My daughter needed this book for a reading project at school so I purchased it. She showed me that it had multiple duplicate pages and there is no way to know if we got the ending of the book or not.The content of the book was great just annoyed there was a misprint

Patricia Polacco can reach from the pages of her books and touch your heart!
I am collecting Patricia Polacco books for my children. We received our first, "bun bun button" in the mail through a program called Books from Birth that is sponsored by Dolly Parton. Children who are signed up at birth for this free program receive one book per month till they are five years and go to school. (Excellent Charity but that's another review) This is all about making lemonade from lemons that life throws your way. It is sweet. It is an excellent book. All of hers are. Patricia Polacco never fails to touch the heart.

Great book about friendship and childhood cancer and breast cancer
Very sweet book. I bought it for my now going into 1st grader because the author is visiting her school. The info on the book states it is about friendship, which it is. It is also about cancer, which is great but perhaps providing that info would help buyers make an informed choice to buy the book or not. I did read the book before reading to my 6 year old, so was able to make the choice of reading to her or not, I waited about a month. We both liked it and she did ask what cancer was. Unfortunately we know a child that was dx at 5 months old with retinoblastoma (eye cancer) and have been praying for her for over a year now--she is doing well, so she knew a little about that word. I am also an RN, so just decide how you will explain it before you start because your child will ask. This was a very touching story.

Great message!
I used this book to introduce my students to our school's collection of coins for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Their hearts were touched by the battle both characters fought against cancer. I will say that the mention of the teacher losing a breast due to cancer had me concerned about the reaction of my 5th grade boys. I shouldn't have been worried. They were fine with it. When it came time for daily reminders about donating coins, many students said, "Remember The Lemonade Club!"

Powerful story with a good ending
Some of the stories about dealing with cancer have a sad ending, but this one doesn't, so it is even better. I love Patricia Polacco's writing and drawing, and this is a terrific way to let kids hear about cancer in a way they can absorb. Although 5th grade is probably the target on reading level, you can edit as you read to younger children and it works just as well because of the terrific pictures. I have read it to Kindergarten and Second graders, and there were students in each class dealing with someone in their family with cancer - leukemia and breast cancer are the ones mentioned in the book, but it helps the kids deal with the topic.

Good book but not for a 5-year-old
Luckily I censor all the books before I read them to my 5-year old very sensitive and inquisitive daughter. I bought this for her as her dad is battling cancer at the moment and I thought it would help her gain a better understanding of what he's going through.Although a brilliant book about importance of friendship and positive attitude when dealing with a life-threatening illness, this is certainly not the book for a child this age group. I just don't think she would cope very well with technical details and understand the reference to models being "flat-chested" just yet. I could've altered some bits of the book, but she is now at the stage when she can follow most of the text with me. I think the book would just generally be too big for her and most of the ideas difficult to grasp and digest.Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book myself but would probably recommend it to a girl of 9-10 and plus.
