Looking for distortion, found overdrive!!
I really enjoy this pedal, I was looking for a nice distorted tone and I ended up finding a lovely lovely overdrive tone that I obviously love lol. I got the pedal a few days before I was supposed to and it was used but great condition. 5 stars for sure!

Nice
Excellent box. Sounds like a tube amp overdriven

Not really what it's promoted as, but that's not why I bought it
Marshall's advertising for this pedal promotes it as a metal pedal, but that's really not where it's strength lies. It is capable of that scooped-mid Metallica style crunch, but it is so much more versatile than that. There are two modes: overdrive and distortion. The overdrive mode is where this pedal really shines. Without using the contour knob, the gain knob provides for an excellent early Eric Clapton "Bluesbreaker" style tone on low settings to a Appetite for Destruction style tone on the high gain settings. With the gain turned all the way up and with some tweaking of the contour and frequency knobs you can get that scooped mid metal tone, which I personally have little need for and which, honestly, I think is better done by many other OD pedals.I am more of a country/blues/rockabilly/classic rock style player, and the overdrive on this thing suits most of my needs perfectly. The distortion mode is a major letdown though. It is voiced with entirely too much low end, and you'll have to do some major fiddling with the eq knobs to even get a sound that is halfway passable. Not really worth the effort. Without this issue this pedal would be a 5 star piece of equipment. But as I said before the overdrive mode is phenomenal for a pedal in this price range and definitely deserves the Marshall name.

Great vintage pedal
They don't make 'em like this anymore. Nice, tasteful distortion without being insane. Makes my solid state amp sound like a tube on overdrive.

Great addition!
I have been playing for about 35 years now and have gone through an enormous amount of gear changes. I have played everything except for Hip Hop and Rap in various different bands and solo gigs. I have owned and used several classic makes of tube amps over the years and have pretty much gone to solid state set ups because of their dependability and weight. That said, I really like the warmth and growl of an old tube amp made by Marshall and the true clean sounds of a Fender or Peavey. My main gig amp now days is a Peavey Special Chorus 212 which in it's own right sounds great. With this pedal however it sounds Fantastic! The Marshall JH1 I think is a very misunderstood pedal. I have read several reviews on various sites that claim it's too dark or hard to dial in. I found none of this to be true for myself. The JH1 is straight forward in design, built like a tank, and easy to adjust for a variety of tones and styles. It took me about three adjustments to dial it in even without a manual. It adds a great full, warmth to a solid state amp that I guarantee 99.99% of guitarists would never suspect you weren't playing through a classic tube amp unless they saw what your amp setup was. I leave this pedal on all the time because it gives my amps the full, rich sound of a classic tube amp that has all the clean and articulate tones of a classic Fender or Peavey as well as the warm growl of a Marshall stack. The JH1 can easily be adjusted for the great growl sounds of Clasic hard rock and blues by adding gain and contour to the warmth and clean sounds for Jazz and country by reducing gain and rolling up the tone knob. I am sorry to hear that Marshall gave up on this pedal and quit making it. It's a great addition to any rig for a guitarists that wants the sound of a full, rich classic tube amp from the 50's or the hard hitting rock and blues sounds from the 70's and 80's without the collector prices. This is one pedal I will never part with and if something happened to it I would look to immediately replace it. I would suggest you buy one now before they become hard to find.

killer marshall tone pedal
i give this a 5 out of 5 because it sounds amazing and its nice and compact. its perfect for getting that marshall sound without needed an actual marshall. does it sound excactly like my marshall 4x10 h head? nope but its pretty damned close. it just doesnt have that tube response all those tubes give. but its a killer non tube distortion and when put into a all tube hiwatt which I do, it gives that warmth it needs, plus all the sustain, not overly amounts of noise, and nice palm muted crunch you demand for that metal solo tone(also puts plenty of harmonics).I love it , its my new fave pedal and im sure that anyone who tries it will also love it and agree its the next best thing to having an actual all tube mashall amp.like i say it gives about a 9 out 10 marshall tone emulation score.

For A Friend
Product was purchased for a friend who is full time musician. Tried it out, wasn't exactly what he was looking for in terms of gain. Product arrived quickly in fine condition but just didn't do what he expected. So was returned after 15 minute try out.

Don't bother....
The ad says made in Japan, which is what I wanted and expected. This item is made in China...... inferior to the original vintage pedal it claims to be. Junk.

Wo Marshall draufsteht.....

Very Satisfied!
Versatile and powerful tone! Doesn't offer the insanely high gain that a Boss pedal might, but I think whether or not that's good boils down to personal preference. I enjoy jamming with this pedal!
