Are normal steel strings compatible?

Accepted Answer

Normal nylon (not steel) classical guitar strings are compatible, yes. We do not recommend using steel strings (too much tension for such a short scale), but any classical guitar string set will work perfectly with the Loog Mini: You'd have to use strings 2nd (B), 3rd (G) and 4th (D), tuned up to E-B-G, respectively. Hope this helps.

Question 2

Is it suitable for a 5-year old?

It has so far survived my purchase for my 3 year old (now 4) for a year now.  He doesn't really want to learn chords, but enjoys de-tuning it. It is surprisingly well-constructed.

Question 3

The response about Lefties says we can simply " flip the order of the strings" so a lefty can play. What does that mean?

Accepted Answer

There is no reason for a lefty to play any differently than a righty and many reasons why they should play the same.   It has nothing to do with the dominant hand for writing or eating.  It is like asking for a left handed computer keyboard.  In fact, chord charts are designed for left handed fingering on normal guitars.  If you convert to a "left handed guitar" you will need right hand chord fingering charts.  
Left handed persons would do fine using their left hand for fretting and chords on a normally configured guitar.   You learn finger muscle memory with the hand you practice with for left handed fingerboard fretting or right handed finger picking.  Your guitar dominant hand is the one you train.    
Nearly all guitar instruction is based on normal configuration and you will not be able to play a standard guitar at a party or friends house.
You can't just flip the strings correctly unless you replace the nut and compensated bridge and maybe the pick guard.   Also the strap pin, if there is one, might be on the wrong side of the neck.  
Go to a store and try them out.  They sometimes have left handed models and can show you the difference.  Think hard before you go the left handed route, guitars are for a lifetime.  Many guitar players eventually want multiple guitars, electric, acoustical, classical, 12 string etc.
