The artwork is absolutely stunning. There is a swirly feel to it if that makes sense, an ethereal roundness that makes the story feel non threatening and sweet. Witches in this book use symbols drawn within circles to create magic, this is seen in a lot of different stories and I always love this style of magic. I think this author has used it particularly well. The use and interaction of objects with the magic symbols is interesting, and the magic objects are super creative. The overall story is so exciting. I was immediately drawn into the book. None of the characters themselves are very unique, yet they are all so fun and interesting I don’t really mind. I can’t wait to read the next volume. This would be age appropriate for 10+ yr olds. However, the are some drawings representing artworks that depict nude woman. They’re all simply drawn, few details and in good taste. Just something to keep in mind before handing this book to a child :) Review: Magical, whimsical, and such a great story - Me and my twin are obsessed with this manga series. I love the complicated, Art Deco inspired panels and just everything about the delicate line work. The story is so engaging too— it’s about a young girl who wants to become a witch and gets what she wants… however she ends up jeopardizing her mother in the process and now has to come up with a way to rescue her by training under another witch and living with other apprentices. I love the friendships she forms with the other girls and her teacher/mentor is like a cool father figure she never had, and the magic system is full of as much beauty as there is darkness and danger. Highly recommend. Also, this book isn’t like Harry Potter and the first person who compares it to that owes me a soda. If anything, it’s more like Howl’s Moving Castle, (for its tone and vibe), both the book and the movie. I would even compare it to some of Ursula K Le Guin’s work for It’s world building and focus on character, though that ones a bit more of a stretch just because her writing style is a bit different. Anyway, stop reading this comment and go get yourself a copy (or copies) of this manga. It’s a real treat.

Worth it for the beautiful art and paneling
I've been seeing so much chatter about this manga because the trailer for the anime came out recently, and with the success of Frieren and Delicious In Dungeon I guess the algorithm keeps pushing for Which Hat Atelier. As someone working on my own graphic novel, I decided to give it a try to learn from it. I will agree that the art and paneling are fantastic. I just finished reading Puella Magi Madoka Magical, and compared to that one this is far easier to follow visually, as well as better drawn. However, the dialogue and text exposition do betray Witch Hat Atelier quite noticeably. To be fair, most manga and anime have a weakness in dialogue and exposition, so maybe this is not particularly egregious, but to me it just stands out more because the art and paneling are so beautiful and so easy to follow, that it feels like the author didn't have as much faith in their art. This pertains to the first book, so I wonder if it gets better in the following volumes. Just to give an example from chapter one, the emotional tone can be betrayed by the over exposition in dialogue, and the dialogue could be replaced by correct clues that are already there in the art. Still, it's a cute story that could be even deeper with better dialogue and less text as exposition.

Gorgeous, Engaging Manga Series
I am a middle-aged adult who isn't into comics or graphic novels, but heard about this series and thought it might be a fun, new way to connect with my kids. My young adult daughter and I read the first 6 books in this series (we plan to read the rest!) and loved them! The story is engaging and the illustrations are gorgeous. The reason I generally don't read comics and graphic novels is that I enjoy the feeling of "falling through the page" into the story, imagining the characters and setting on my own. With Witch Hat Atelier, the illustrations enhance rather than take away from the experience. There is nothing violent, profane, or too scary about this series. It's appropriate for middle-school through adult readers.

First ever manga i own. Been a manga/ anime enjoyer for the better part of two decades now. Even though i have been an admirer of the medium for a long time, for numerous reasons i have been consuming them by means what one can call , of questionable legality. I have read this manga but i wanted to buy it for how pretty it is. especially after watching a couple anitubers like Gigguk gushing grannies over the physical manga for this series , which isn't exaggerated at all. this is truly magnificent. hopefully BUG films will do justice to the anime adaptation. highly recommended!
