Suspenseful and humorous, as well as thought provoking. The reader can feel a kinship toward her.This book has her personal life in the forefront a great deal. It's the Holiday Season & she's in a less than stellar social position. New Year's Eve is literally a bust.As if she isn't in a bad enough personal state, Ms. Milllhone's ex comes calling on her as well. To say he's a loser would be kind. There's a little surprise waiting for her on his end as well. I found the main plot in this novel becomes a bit weak & convoluted. The book strays away from it's main plot.It's refreshing that the main character is not some super human sleuth, but just a normal down to earth person. She goes through a great deal of boredom chasing the truth in her PI role. I also find Ms. Grafton quite talented in her use of metaphors & in her Southern California descriptions.I think one reason Sue Grafton has been so successful with this series is she was savvy enough to create a "Normal" character in Kinsey Millhone. These books (this series) were meant to be read in order. Having just finished reading Agatha Christie, Ross MacDonald, Dorothy Sayers, I wondered in the beginning how much it mattered if I read the Kinsey Millhone series in order or not. Most series don't matter as there is rarely any continuity in time over the course of 5 or 10 novels. There's some, but mostly not.Well, this series is different. Sue Grafton meant these to be read in order. Don't get me wrong, it's not as if I have any inside information, I'm just telling you what I think based on reading the first 5. They're continuous in time, with recurrent characters coming in and out in time sync from their previous appearances. You'd be doing yourself a disservice to read them out of order.Just start at "A", and continue until you've either finished, or had enough. I plan on reading all of them in order. Fast read, and a lot of excitement. Sue Grafton certainly picked up mantle where previous hard-boiled detective authors left off.
