The seat is very adjustable. Depending on ones riding technique/skill level (some grip the seat with their thighs, using a different seat hight than if resting on the seat) it should fit most riders between 5'5" and 6'2". My son was 4'9" when I bought it for him. He fit it perfectly at the time and has grown into it even more now. I think your son should just barely fit it. I would not go any smaller as he will outgrow it too quickly.
