You should be familiar with a good amount of mathematical methods of physics and basic QM, ED and CM. A little statistical physics is helpful when he discusses ensembles but not needed. Jackson, Goldstein and Sakurai along with Arfken-Weber should be enough for the next stage - QFT. Zee + Peskin is a good intuitive and abstract combination.
