SOG FastHawk Polished Tomahawk - Tactical Axe with Sheath, Throwing Hatchet w/ Hammer Axe Edge for Competition Throwing, Camping, Hunting (F06PN-CP)

Wow, was I impressed with this one. This is an awesome little tool. Almost shaving sharp right out of the package. I love the look of this model with the contrast between the shiny steel and the black handle. I plan on taking this with me backpacking, to handle light wood processing and to ward off the larger black bears and mountain lions. Now, I am unstoppable! I have tested this out and it worked fantastic for chopping up some large dead branches up to 4 or 5 inches thick. The weight of the hawk is just right. Feels light weight, but substantial enough to do it's job. I opted for the hard quick release sheath, so I can carry it on my belt for easy access, and now I'm bad to the bone. I wouldn't mess with me, even if I was a rabid honey badger.

I purchased these for my sons as gifts and ended up buying one myself. you can get stainless in black or polished. The polished stainless is more visible in the woods which can be good or bad depending on what you are doing. Throwing for fun... good. hunting... bad. although if its in your pack or sheath while hunting not a problem. There are a thousand uses for these at camp. the are EXCELLENT for opening the chest cavity on a large deer. It is a blast to set up a log and practice throwing. Very durable. They come to hunting camp with us every year. Fast Hawk is the smaller version. I use both depending on the job but the Fast Hawk is smaller and lighter so It would be my pick if i had to choose.

I’ve just recently became a huge fan of SOG. I’ve heard the name for years but have always bought CRKT or Gerber knives. I saw such positive reviews for these Tomahawks that I bought my girlfriend and myself one for our bug out bags. The Tomahawk is made so well that I ended up buying SOG backpacks to replace our North Face bug out bags. I then bought two different SOG knives for our every day carry kit. Everything I’ve bought so far has been way better than expected for the price point. If you’re reading this, not sure if you should make the switch, I promise you this company has great products. We made the decision to buy as much of their products as possible. This review isn’t getting me anything free or discounted, just want to pass my knowledge of great products for a bug out bag or edc on to the next person. SOG makes great gear/knives and if you buy an item to test it out, I’m sure you’ll make the same decision we made to trust this company. Thanks SOG!!!

This axe from SOG is a real beauty. It is crafted so well and looks so nice, I was hesitant to take it out to the woods and smash and cut things with it. But since I'm not going to keep it for a display on my wall, even though tempted, that's what I did. I smashed through a concrete block with little effort using the pointed end. I then whacked on a 3 inch tree branch until it fell, then proceeded to cut it into pieces using the axe blade. For good measure, I cut some dead wood into fire sized lengths. After a good hour or so, I had given the Fasthawk a fair workout. I was ready to give it a well deserved 5 Star rating. Until I was placing it back into it's sheath and noticed that the head of the axe was loose. There was a good quarter of an inch of play (movement left to right) between the head and handle. I'm pretty sure I can tighten the screws that hold the head onto the handle, but if I had taken the axe out for a weekend or more of hard use, I would not have been that fortunate. Since this is not full tang, there seems to be a flaw in the method they chose to join the axe and handle together. So, I dropped a star from my rating. I would still recommend the Fasthawk from SOG. I've owned a few axes that would not have destroyed a concrete block so easily and still looked so darned good afterwards. It also cut through a lot of tough oak. I will however bring the proper screwdriver along next time. Just in case. And who knows, to give SOG the benefit of the doubt, maybe I just got one that wasn't tightened correctly at the factory.

I've never owned any sort of tomahawk or hatchet before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. When the SOG Fasthawk arrived in the mail, it was exactly the size I expected it to be (I purposely ordered it over the larger model). A burning question among buyers, including myself before buying, was "why buy the polished model?" Simply put, tomahawks are for throwing, and for most people who would throw a tool like this, an all-black model would be hard to find given you miss your target and you didn't quite catch where the hawk bounced off to. The extra few dollars are well worth the extra visibility of finding your hawk if you lose it in the bush. Not to mention it looks absolutely awesome in the air! I bought the Fasthawk (keep in mind, it's 12 inches long from the head to the base of the handle) because I'm a smaller person (5'5", 120 lbs) with little hands, and also for the ease of concealment. They both have plastic sheaths manufactured for them, but they cost about the same as the hawk itself and for most people the nylon sheath is enough. The reduction in size and weight means that any action you perform with the Fasthawk will be weaker than if you did the same with the Tomahawk (15 inches overall, same measurement points). The tomahawk has the edge as an all-around tool, but the fasthawk, I think, has the edge as a weapon. Swings and throws are faster, and it can be stowed away in even a simple drawstring backpack. For me, the smaller model was the ideal buy. Throwing these hawks is a matter of distance judgement and consistent throwing technique. If you can master both of those, you'll be able to hit targets at some pretty wild distances within a few weeks of normal use. Regarding quality and neatness of the product, I'd say SOG did a very good job in the manufacturing process, and they know how to make a hawk for sure. I once threw mine and thought I'd have to reprofile the entire edge because I missed my target and my hawk slammed edge-first into a rock. By some miracle, the edge was fine and only needed a 1 minute file session to get rid of the burr that formed on the point of impact. For stainless steel, the head is extremely tough and will last a long time. Reading through my own review, I've realized Tomahawks are one of those things were there's just so many uses that it's hard to choose which of the basic few models would be the most worth it. To be honest, if you're not nit-picky and your habits are flexible, buy whichever one you want; it's more about size for you. If you're a stickler when it comes to your gear, then you might have to think a little bit. Polished or unpolished? Tomahawk or fasthawk? Should I even buy a SOG or buy a more expensive, higher quality model? How about that new voodoo hawk? The choices are seemingly endless, but rest assured that SOG makes a mean line of tomahawks regardless of which one you buy. Can't go wrong with these hawks.

I will start out by saying I am a woman and I got this for a few different reasons. One, I have always been interested in non-firearm weapons. I love shooting a bow, so I figured throwing was next in line Two, I often have branches falling in my yard that need to be cut up to put in my fire pit. I have a rather heavy hatchet, but my hand and arm gets tired from it almost immediately. A big man arm and hand would be fine for it, but I am not a man, so the lighter weight of this item appealed to me. I looked at the heavier version, but my friend has one and it immediately felt too big and heavy in my hand. I am really glad I got the 19oz fasthawk. Not only does it slice through my fallen branches like a charm, but my hand and arm don't hurt! When I first went to practice throwing it, I found it light and easy to hold and throw. I quickly became successful at getting it within 6" of my target and lodging the blade or pick into it (a couple trees, and a sawed off stump turned on its side) Even after about 50 throws my arm didn't get tired. The real exercise there is walking to and from your target, haha. Throwing it is really satisfying. You hear the sound of it spinning in the air, and the thunk as is lodges in your target (a hollow dead tree is nice) I got the silver over the black because it's easier to find when you miss. They say the black is better if you don't want an enemy to see the reflection. That wasn't an issue to me, as I hopefully will never be using this against a person!! Either way, I've been leaving it next to my bed in case of a break in (if my 70lb pit bull doesn't chase them off first)

I will start off by saying, we go camping a lot and like to "rough it" when we do. This last weekend, me and the boys went camping up in the ice and snow. I left my other axe at home and tried this new one. I put it through the tests too. We picked through 6" of ice to get water, chopped down a 10" diameter (approx) tree. Used it as a mild pry bar to split a log apart for kindling, then.... just because we got bored, we even took turns throwing it at a tree to see who could get it to stick. This things is AMAZING! Still looks brand new and worked like a champ. I suggest hitting it with a sharpening stone to get a nice good edge on it, and also, attach a lanyard to it because the handle is hard plastic and WILL slip out of your hand if you are getting to crazy with it. You can make a sweet lanyard with some 550 cord etc. I will be buying these for my boys too. SOG did it right with this.

SOG makes in my opinion some of the greatest knives/hatchets/multitools for your hard earned dollars. I have this hatchet in both the polished finish and oxide finish. Both have held up great in all kinds of situations. I bought this fast hawk to carry lashed to my hunting pack for splitting pelvis bones and quartering (I think its faster than sawing lol). I previously used the regular larger version of the fast hawk but it is slightly heavier. Using it day to day for what it is designed for it will work great. I did loosen the head of my larger hawk due to accidentally hitting cement while splintering some wood for fire starter which sucked but it is still very usable (very durable) although im sure after more use it will only start to loosen more now. It does use hex bolts to fasten the head to the handle and im sure if i wanted to buy those I could tighten it right back up. Very good blade, I recommend to anyone and every one.

Ich habe die Axt für den Garten gekauft, um damit alte Äste oder Sträucher wegzukloppen auf deutsch. Es war aber so stumpf auch die Spitze hinten dass ich es Nacharbeiten musste damit ich mit der Spitze in der Erde lockern konnte damit ich an die Wurzel kam um sie zu zerteilen so dass nichts mehr Nachwuchs.
