Great even for young car enthusiasts
My Great Nephew loved it. He's been a car enthusiast since he was a toddler. He's a very mature 10 year old and I figured that he was ready for some technical information, not just model cars and NASCAR. According to my Nephew, his son (my Great Nephew) loves this book. It just proves that technical books are perfect for kids when they have a great interest. I skimmed over the book and it's very well written, clear, and interesting. I liked it and I'm not even into cars. I intend to buy more in this series for him.

A good base of knowledge
It's a good, readable, and comprehensive overview of the different options available. Gives the DIY exhaust builder plenty of information to figure out what is needed to achieve power output goals, and different ways of doing it.

Great book that not only covers exhaust system design on its own, but also looks at the other factors in the engine that work hand in hand with the designs that you create downstream. After all, the power train works as a whole so its nice to see the author's decision to not treat the subject like it exists in a vacuum.

There is never an explanation about why a component is better so you know what to look for
Very disappointing. I thought this book would provide an in-depth education about exhaust systems so that I could evaluate components not listed in the book. Not so, very general explanations, no sience. There is never an explanation about why a component is better so you know what to look for. It is nothing more a really long Hot Rod magazine article.

It’s a good book, but i wanted more scientific explanations and math calculations. It looks like it is a review of experiences from different companies and it keeps there, not useful for engineers.

Very basic. No real info related to designing or even building a header.
Very basic, I was looking for something with calculations for header length and diameter, compensation factors for coating or wrapping the header. Stepped headers and so on.

very disappointed
This book doesn't really deliver what the title sugests - there are a lot of worked examples and pretty pictures of specific vehicles bit no real hard scientific facts - The formulas are very vague and nothing new - if you really want to design and build your own exhaust system there is much better reading from the same publisher by Vizard and others - or use pipemax software. All in all I was very disapointed with my purchase

A good intro, but not exactly a guide to building your own exhaust
It’s interesting if you’re a gear head with a hole in your knowledge where exhaust systems are concerned, a good intro to how they work, and it dispells some myths and falsehoods that have currency. It if you need to. Sit down and hammer out the details on what to order in for the exhaust you plan to weld up yourself in the garage for your come-from-nowhere world beating race car this is not your book. Still worth the money, still glad I read it, but I need to build an exhaust for a unique application and this book doesn’t have enough info on things like quantitative data on restriction through different curves, or routing systems on different sorts of chassis, or any of a hundred other things crucial to approaching the highest fficiency systems. Maybe such a book isn’t possible, I don’t know... I just know I have 740hp on open headers and I need all of it. Theoretically I can actually increase that number with a great exhaust...
