It depends what you are trying to do. if you want to point it to the moon or bright objects then I guess it would work. Deep space and astrophotography would require you to put it on the tripod. How much extra gear would I need to get?** A: I am a newcomer to telescopes & I am very pleased to have purchased a 5" Celestron. The bigger ones are heavier & too big to lug around all of the time. If you want a bigger Celestron, they actually work the same as the 5". With it, I got a pretty neat CD with star positions for every day of the year. I have researched the extras you need or might want & came up with the following: Celestron case...It seems expensive, but my Celestron 5" fits perfectly in there plus a lot of extras...very well built. Celestron tripod case...fits my tripod very well...good quality. Celestron GPS...not needed, but is very convenient, especially if you view from different locations...saves you the trouble of re-entering latitude & longitude. Celestron case of assorted lenses & filters...good idea because you will want them sooner or later anyway. Celestron battery pack...used when you are away from electric hookup...I bought the cheaper one...It includes a adapter to plug into your car if you want to use power from there. I didn't need a radio like the more expensive one & seems to be of good quality. I bought a $125.00 solar lens for looking at the sun. You must have a solar lens for sun viewing. You can get cheaper ones. I hope this helps... **Q: What is the exact weight of the package in pounds? The amazon description says it weighs 39 pounds! this telescope is very small! I need to know.** A: Leonardo O - I think that the weight is correct. The reason is not the telescope...but Celestron includes also a sturdy tripod... and the tripod does weigh at least fifteen pounds or so ( my guess ). Also because this is a telescope , Celestron uses quiet a bit of cardboard and packing materials to protect it. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ good buy *by V***U on 9 June 2021* nice telescope to see nebulae and deep space objects. i am glad that I have this telescope. really loved it ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five Stars *by S***H on 2 November 2014* really good ### ⭐ A costly lesson *by H***M on 16 September 2015* Update as on 31.Oct.2015: celestron has given up on my support and told me to check with local astronomy club to setup the telescope. Update as on 21.oct.2015: It has been more than 45 days now. I have been in touch with celestron support; with the exception of motor speed adjustment issue, I am still pleagued by goto alignment issue. The company is yet to acknowledge star pointer switch issue. I have to switch it on and off multiple times to get it working. I purchased nexstar 5se telescope and had it delivered on 3.Sept.2015 (India). I have had trouble with it from day 1. The following are the issues. 1. Battery life is low: The battery power does not last more than 10 to 15 minutes. I have wasted 4 sets of batteries. I had read about this issue when I was reading reviews, but not everyone had this issue. Solution: I was told to use high amperage batteries by the vendor. (Looks like I need to have a separate budgeting every month just to buy batteries) OR buy a celestron powertank. 2. Poor response from motors: The remote works fine when I change the directions of the telescope without any problems. As soon as I try to use skyalign, the motor response become extremely slow. The issue starts when I try to align the 2nd object and continues into 3rd object. I tried using celestron powertank and had the same issue. 3. Skyalign does not work: I have tried using skyalign technology; 8 out of 9 times, it has failed to align. The one time it aligned, the telescope was pointing everything in the wrong direction. 4. Trembling tripod: The tripod trembles under slightest of wind. There is lot of shaking when I try to focus the object on the OTA. 5. Star finderscope has shortcomings: The object located at the center of Finderscope does not aligh with OTA. There is loose connection in the switch. 6. I am really surprised there is no power adapter given along with the product. Looks like the battery issue is a known problem with your product. Please include atleast in future packages as it provides backup to your customers. I am very unhappy with the overall product with the exception of the optics. It has been 12 days and I have not had a single day I was able to enjoy the telescope. I had read very bad support reviews for Celestron. My only hope now is that, the product has 2 year warranty and expect it to make it work some time in the future.
