Beautiful coffee table book. It's substantial in size and has beautiful, every day photos of life in Italy. I'm so pleased. A side note: I am glad I went through it before placing it on the table, because I ended up tearing out a page from a nightclub where a woman is surrounded by men, sprawled on the floor half covering her naked chest with her arm. This one page was not appropriate material for a family book- in my opinion. Otherwise a wonderful book. I'm so happy to have it in my home.

Great book. Tons of history. But big.

Good book

beautiful coffee table book. We look through it often and reminisce about our trip to Italy.

Best one volume collection of photos of Rome you’ll find anywhere. Includes stunning and original perspectives of Roman architecture, urban culture, and people. Pore over it before or after visiting Rome to help spot and remember “don’t miss” places not always covered in standard travel guides. Superb quality paper and printing. Only possible drawback: so large and heavy a volume that you will need a table or stand to enjoy. Too much for your lap.

Really like this book, excellent pictures of Rome

For a book called "ROME, Portrait of a City" it contains very few photos of the city itslef. This book for sure does not portray the magnificent city Rome is. Yes, the book is big and heavy, yes it has a lot of pictures (not very good quality by the way), but most of them are of people that easily could be elswhere. I would say 10% of the pictures, if not less, are even worth looking at. I do not reccomend this purchase to anyone, and if you want a good book of Rome, this is definitely not it, the title is so deceiving, and at a very high price for what it is. So sorry, but in fact, this is the first Taschen book that disappoints me.

Possibly no book could ever do justice to the magnificence of Rome. This one tries though, and maybe even gets close to conveying something of the greatness of Rome. The book consists of photographs covering the years from 1839 to the present day, divided into chapters of several decades each. Many of the early photographs are by anonymous photographers, and even a great deal of the later ones are not by known photographers. There are masterpieces by photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, & Alfred Eisenstaedt. The images start out in sepia or black & white, including an 1857 image of The Forum when it was used as a place for laundry to dry in the sunshine. An 1841 image of the Trevi fountain contrasts to a recent colour picture near the end of the book with the fountain used as a setting for a fashion show in July 2016, or the iconic 1960 picture from La Dolce Vita. Many of the early shots are enchanting: either lantern slide images enlarged, or hand coloured sepia pictures, such as the Pantheon in 1905, or Tivoli hill from the same year. St Peter's features repeatedly, and looks heavenly with a beam of light extending down into the dim interior in one image. There are many images of the celebrities of the Dolce Vita era, including Sophia Loren on her balcony in 1955, or Audrey Hepburn & Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday. A rare shot from 1890 shows Buffalo Bill at a cafe with two Indians in headdress. They were in town for a 'Wild West' show. There are plenty of people shots, of children playing in alleyways, colourful markets, a shoeshine boy, priests playing volleyball, fashionably dressed women, cats being fed in 1951, and a 1957 double page colour image of men playing football against a dramatic backdrop of ancient aqueducts. The book tries to include more than just the tourist sights, or the stereotypical images of vespas and pasta. Altogether, a fine tribute to an amazing city.

Bought this based on the raving reviews etc. Photos are nice but there no point if you don't know what you are looking at or what is the context or commentary behind the photo... most of the text is NOT in English. I think the description of "Multi language" in the is misleading. Willbe returning it.
