Q: will this work on front springs on a bmw x5 ?

Yeah, it should work on any automotive application.

Q: Will this work on the newer atv/utv coil over springs?

I ran this by our engineers this morning and they were pretty sure that it will work in that application, but they wanted to do a little research since there seems to be a significant variety of springs

Q: The lone 1-star reviewer notes: "OK for big springs but for smaller coil overs won't work!" Does anyone have a different opinion?

We have been using this for more then a year and it has worked on large and small struts

Q: Does it need to be mounted to use?

Yes it needs to be mounted. Standard options are wall, stand or bench top mounting. You can buy the stand or bench top kit from Branick, or make your own.
