To provide context for my review, I am a behavioral medicine physician, who specializes in hypnotherapy for pain management and have developed and teach a 200+ hour medical and pain management hypnotherapy certification course. Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain has some great material. There are a lot of methods presented, so there are many potential approaches and practices that can be developed from what Eimer presents.I have found the book to be more appropriate for a mind-body pain management practitioner than for a patient. That said, I have used it as a sort of workbook where I translated the concepts and helped patients develop exercises that were realistic for them to do on their own. I believe it takes a motivated patient to stick with the book without becoming overwhelmed. I would recommend it in the way I use it, as a source for co-developing material patients can explore to find methods of pain relief that work well for them. While I received some great ideas to use with my patients. However, none of my patients patients got very far into the book because they said it was too complicated and difficult to follow. Given my particular personality, if I was a patient suffering from chronic pain, I would last about 15 minutes with the book. People who are more patient would last longer. Some people have the special character required to take the book and run with it by adapting the approaches and methods to their own needs. I have found these kinds of people generally benefit tremendously from just about anything they read that has useful information because they bulldog their way through it. So, I recommend the book highly for some uses and some people and less highly for others. A coworker of mine borrowed the book, but could not get past chapter 2 for the same reason several of my patients could not read it - too complicated and too much information packed in too tightly. On the other hand, a patient of mine got a copy and probably cut the number of sessions we spent in half because she was very diligent in using the methods inside. I trust that most people know enough about themselves to know how useful this kind of book might be for them. So choose wisely. While I would be cautious about recommending the book for patients before getting to know them, I would not hesitate to recommend it to professionals who practice hypnosis for pain management. So, for most lay readers, it gets 2 stars, for lay readers with more fortitude, I give 3 to 4 stars and for extremely highly motivated lay readers, I give 5 stars. For most professional readers, it gets 4 stars if it is utilized as a way of developing exercises to use with patients for both in office sessions and for co-developing home self management exercises. For professionals who are already practicing hypnosis and do not want any support developing self management exercises with and for patients, I would give the book 3 stars. It is probably notable that I have been using the book with patients for six years, so I found it a worthwhile investment.Because I have found that most lay people find the book hard to use, I decided that there should be a book that was more user friendly for patients. So I began writing my own. I found it is a lot easier to criticize someone else's book before writing my own. After getting 270ish pages into writing, I have a great deal more respect for anyone who writes a book aimed toward a lay audience - even at my stage of writing I have lost track of how many all-nighters I have done (not pleasant even in residency, and brutal in one's 40s). So I can only imagine what it has taken Eimer to write a book geared to lay readers. My hat goes off to him. I mention the difficulty of writing to a lay audience because it is very different than writing to a professional audience, and much more challenging. For example, I am also writing a text for professionals and it is infinitely easier because I can fall back on jargon and a more academic style (perhaps lazy, but true). By the way, this is not a plug (since I am not telling you the titles or anything about them), I am merely mentioning it to emphasize my respect for the author's efforts.Good luck on your choice for a book that fits your needs.

BEST of its kind
I'm an emergency physician who took a hypnosis course 40 years ago, and I use hypnosis ("suggestion", creating self-fulfilling prophecies, analgesia and calming) on a daily basis. Pain has steadily increased as a top complaint in the ER (And in all of medicine) and I've been reading everything available to try to learn more, both to help my patients and to help manage my own pains. This book is absolutely the best I've found for the professional who wants an update -- or even an introduction, although I'd strongly recommend taking a course from the ASCH or similar first. And to my surprise it would be very useful for a well-educated and highly motivated patient! I think it should be the basis for a required course in the fourth year for every medical student. Worth the money!

Being hit by a Mac Truck 30 years ago.
I was hit by a Mac Truck 30 years and sometime the pain feels like it was just yesterday. This book has given me wonderful pointers and numerous hypnotic scripts that have lessen the pain dramatically. It has quick fixes for relaxing the pain before it is out of control. Is very well written, maybe a little complicated at times (hard to understand for a laymen), but over all pretty easy to read. Every page you are learning something to help relieve pain. The CD is worth the money alone, I listen to it daily for pain relief.Thank you Doctor for making life more tolerable.Rich

If you are determined to manage you pain, this is the book!
I have chronic pain and I treat people who have chronic pain. This is not only an excellent book on using self-hypnosis to reduce chronic pain and suffering (The author is no fly-by-night. He is a highly respected expert on hypnosis), it is one of the best chronic pain self-management books. Although there are other good books available on chronic pain (see my other reviews), if I could only recommend one, for the committed, I think it would probably be this one. If you are ready to learn how to greatly reduce suffering from chronic pain, I strongly recommend this book.

Invaluable for pain management...
I am a clinical psychotherapist. Dr. Eimer's book is invaluable in helping patients of serious personal injury manage their own pain. Dr. Eimer is the victim of chronic pain himself. The CD included with his book provides the patient with the ability to successfully initiate their own hypnotic inductions anytime, day or night. Along with my clinical treatment, I provide a copy of Dr. Eimer's book for any of my patients who are serious about self-managing their own pain. I strongly endorse Anthony Scratchley's philosophy written in Addiction Today Magazine that "...to tame pain, we must use our brain."

Excellent and Practical Book
I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist and regularly use this book as a part of my clients' 'homework'. Every client who experiences pain is unique, and the breadth of exercises in this book give nearly everybody something that works for them.

Wonderful book and CD
Great read.......really gives you a lot of insight before they dive into hypnosis. The CD is a great touch. Loved having the option of reading the book then listening to the CD to practice self hypnosis.
