A Glimpse of Jesus: The Stranger to Self-Hatred

I wanted to love this book but I really did not like it at all. It is so scattered that my brain could not process it and it was actually frustrating. SO many quotes of others that throw it all off.. I kept waiting to see if it would get better and in my opinion it did not. Mat try and read again in the future but not sure.

As trying to live a life as a stranger to self hatred , this book is very self exposing in showing that the self hatred is self center and a lack of compassion to self leads, invariably to a lack of compassion towards others. Which hardens our hearts towards others and turns back on our selves and hardens our hearts towards ourselves. A hard cycle to live with. The solution is compassion to self leads to compassion towards others. Through Christ's example of servant hood.Very well written, very personal from the author,s life.Four star out of five.For those seeing themself as not worthy of anything this is a good beginning to learn MINDFULNESS.

I love reading Brennen Manning. His books are easy reading. You will read and reread.

I have read several of Manning's books over the years, and I bought eight to give away to friends to read and be challenged by his words, ideas and passion. Great book, anything by Manning is worth reading more than once! Manning can be terse at times, but usually because of his passion for people to meet Jesus in a life changing way. Manning is a wordsmith who chooses his words carefully to draw us to his points. He does not buy into religion, but relationship with God through passionate relationship with the Jesus of scriptures. He is far from orthodox-certianly for a Catholic, and this book will certainly challenge any Catholics orthodox views of their faith, as well as Christian's theologies. Buy it.

I only set out to read a few pages a day... 2 days later it was read, loved, underlined, highlighted. I cried with Brennan during one of his prayers. I understood much more about Jesus and God. I understand that compassion is Jesus and compassion is what we need to give every human being INCLUDING ourselves.ROBIN WILLIAMS took his life yesterday and I strongly wish that he had been reading this book and knew how LOVED and special he was. This is a must read if you want to know Jesus better. A please run out and get today if you or someone you know is depressed, suffering from self hatred and just needs to feel loved. I hope this review helped you want to read this amazing book.

If you are struggling to see yourself as God sees you this book will free you to do just that. It's message will sink down into the fiber of your being. It will give you permission to love yourself when perhaps some of the messages that you've received from church is that to love yourself is selfish and self-centered. Not so! What a wonderfully freeing revelation! It has changed my life. I hope it will change yours too! Brennan Manning is so authentic, speaking from his heart when relating his own story throughout the book, that you can't help but be moved into a new place of freedom simply by reading this one book. It has touched more than any other on the topic of loving one's self.

Manning classics Ragamuffin Gospel and Abba's Child have been perennial favorites for me, but how did I miss this one? A Glimpse of Jesus deserves every bit the status of the former titles here and is a must-read for Manning fans and newbies alike. Few modern writers plumb the depths of the broken soul to mine the spiritual treasure Manning continues to unearth, or manage to help us identify the depths of our own belovedness. Brennan Manning, iconic sinner-saint, writes what we all would write, if only we knew how loved we are and how that love transforms all of life. Five stars and a new Manning classic for me!

A short, straightforward account of his understanding of Jesus, with a focus on love.

A book that focuses on developing one's relationship with Jesus, this looks at many of the hindrances to our spiritual growth which result from self-loathing. Eminently practical and rooted in Biblical truth, this is a book for those who struggle to like themselves and feel perpetually condemned.

As always Brennan is brilliant. One of the few authors of whom I will try and read all his writings.
