Lone Wolf (Wolves of the Beyond, Book 1)

I bought this book at a book fair right after it first came out back in 2010 or 2011 when I was in elementary school. This is the book that made me fall in love with reading; when I had nothing but hatred for it before. It was the first book I ever enjoyed reading and still to this day enjoy rereading. I've probably read this book two or three dozen times by now. 20 out of 10 recommend.

I love this book. The characters are likeable, and the plot is engaging. The writing is lyrical and flows well. Although you don't get much closure at the end, it comes throughout the rest of the series. This is the "set the scene" book, but it still is wonderful. I was captivated with the world of Faolan and Thunderheart from page one, and I highly reccomend the whole series to anyone who likes wolves, fantasy, or a good story in general. This is the one series I've read over and over again. It combines adventure, animals, love, family, and mystery. So, you probably can see that I absolutely adore this book. But I think that a buyer should be informed of the pros AND cons. So, here's a few things I didn't like quite as much. 1: I don't like being forced to buy all the books in a series to find out what happens. Well, a lot of mysterious things happen in the first couple books, but they aren't resolved until book 5, Spirit Wolf. It's like one big book that has been chopped in pieces. 2: A lot of the wolf words are hard to remember. I've read the series enough to know what a "malcadh", "gadderheal", "byrrgis", and everything else is, but that was a bit confusing at first. I'm not saying she should have taken out the wolf words completely, as they're a wonderful addition to the wolf lore, but I would have liked a key. A chart of the great chain would have been nice too, but since I have a Kindle I highlighted it so I could see it easily. So, all in all, this is a fantastic book that I highly suggest you read. This was my favorite book for years, and it probably is. This is one that can probably be found at most libraries, but to me it was worth buying. Happy reading!

Faolan, a wolf pup at that time, was a maldach. That meant "cursed one". He had a unusual paw with a splayed design under it. He was given birth by Morgan, in the MacDucan pack, then, by the rules, had to leave the clan and rejoin the others. Her pup was taken by the Obea, who took the pup to a tummfraw, or a "death spot". When Thunderheart found Faolan beside the river, I was so touched that I cried. What would be nicer than being saved by a bear who does not kill you, but instead foster you? I was touched by Thunderheart's kindness, and softness against Faolan. What a beautiful name, naming Faolan "gift" from the "river". I was dismayed and desperate that Thunderheart went to search for Faolan when he thought the winter den was boring. She then died from a rockfall! I cried a lot at that moment. Morgan found Thunderheart's bones and the forgetting stopped.(the forgetting was given by the Sark) Then Morgan soon became blind. While, Faolan goes in search for Thunderheart and goes to the outermost and thinks their savage. He returns and finds... Thunderheart! Her bones and majestic skull. He takes the paw bone with him and finds Gwynneth, the rounge smith owl. He befriends him and have a talk. Gwynneth tells him to go to the packs. He agrees reluctantly. Travelling there, the packs find his footprints and thinks he has a foaming-mouth-disease. They track him and trap him between a wall of fire and the whole pack. As he is big because Thunderheart had fed him a lot, he jumped the wall of fire. He is then asked to become a gnaw wolf, which he agrees. His life would continue along the other books, until the embers of the Sacred Volcanoes disappears and the Great Mending begins. His life with Edme, the wolf he loves I commented this book because it interested me at every sentence, and I would recommend it for 9 ages and up. A thumbs-up to Kathrine Lasky's fans! Great book, Lasky!

Amazing book. I like this book more than the other books in the series. It's about a wolf pup named Faolan who was abandoned by the Obea because he had a splayed paw. Cute and recommended for wolf lovers like me. Though you should probably read The Owls of Ga'hoole before reading this book because it includes them. Though you probably shouldn't read it to small kids (ages 7 and younger) because it would probably be too sad for them. The wolf on the cover reminds me of my cat, possibly because he is gray and white and very cute. But don't pay too much attention to the cover that you aren't interested in the book! The book itself is better than the cover. Thank you Kathryn Lasky! Here are some reasons why it's good: -It has nice, short chapters that are easy for reading when you want to take a break. -A cute but sad book that wolf llovers will probably enjoy reading and talking about. -The prologue and last chapter are my favorite parts. They include a lot of detail. -Lots of chapters and 3 parts: The Beyond, The Outermost, then back to The Beyond. There are my reasons why. The Outermost part is a bit gorey, it has a wolf who is a cannibAL, who eats one of his friends. And it includes detail. Sorry if I'm spoiling it for you. Wolves of the Beyond: Lone Wolf is a heart warming novel that I will enjoy over and over. I will defiantly buy the next book in the series - well done Kathryn Lasky, this is as brilliant as The Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

Great book for kids, my son loves this book and wants the whole set.

A great novel for kids to learn about animal life & ethics

Ich dachte, es gäbe keine Konkurrenz zu den Warrior Cats, aber das ist sie. Qualitativ sogar hochwertiger, poetisch, berührend und spannend. Außerdem wunderbar recherchiert in bezug auf wölfische Verhaltensweisen - eine ganz wunderbare Geschichte - keineswegs nur für Kinder. Natürlich zu kurz.

Moved me from the word go. The emotions and the love that can be shared by different breeds makes me feel that we can change and that life can still be wonderful. Looking forward to reading the series.
