Q: Are they made of cotton?

Yes, it's cotton. Yes, technically it's 12 ply. If I unfold it it's 3x4 squares of see thru gauzy fabric. What has been asked is why can't I purchase the same item that doctors or vets use? In my opinion, after 30 years of medical supply purchasing, this product is gauze. What medical professionals use is cotton sponges. This is not a 4x4 sponge.

This is gauze is 12ply 4" X 4 " un-folded... Folded once = 4" X 2" (Double thickness), Folded twice = 2" X 2" (Quad thickness)... I hope this helps... :-)
