The Complete Land That Time Forgot

Mindless Fun!
I am rereading this tale after being enthralled by it in childhood. It's fun and is quite an adventure! Also, it is quite inexpensive, especially as it contains all three of the Land That Time Forgot books.Okay, some things to know: First, Edgar Rice Burroughs did not set out to be an author. He was a guy who enjoyed reading and got fed up with the pulp garbage being published at the time. He said, "For Heaven's sake, I can even do better than this!" And he sat down to prove it. From his pen have flowed Tarzan Of The Apes, The Outlaw Of Torn, Pellucidar, The Land That Time Forgot, John Carter Of Mars and many others. Fantastic adventures in exotic lands, full of mystery, romance and danger. Quite an accomplishment. Next, these books are dated. Mr. Burroughs was born in the 19th century. He began writing well before 1915. The morals and attitudes of the average middle-income white person at that time were quite differently centered than they are today. Relationships of all kinds are portrayed in ways we might laugh at or be horrified by today. Relationships between women and men, between humans and nature, between races or those between the educated and the ignorant are all filtered through an earlier sensibility. Moreover, many of the attitudes prtrayed are exaggerated to the point of cartoonishness, but with a straight face. So, if you are wont to be offended by something like the suggestion that women are weaker and dependent on men, maybe this isn't the thing for you. If, on the other hand, you can overlook that long-dead authors were writing to different biases than you have and you can roll with it to get at the story, then push on! Third, the premises of many Burroughs books are now known to be utter nonsense. There is no psychic wormhole taking people to Mars to battle aliens and save princesses, there are no colonies of apes raising human babies, and there is no great island in the Antarctic sea protecting a lost land of prehistoric creatures and paleolithic vegetation. It totally doesn't matter. It's pure fantasy. Dive in and suspend disbelief. If you still want to give it a go, The Land That Time Forgot, The People That Time Forgot and Out Of Time's Abyss (all in this volume) are a fun romp through exotic lands with fantastic creatures, full of danger, romance and heartbreak, and an intriguing mystery. This particular version is what used to be called a trade paperback - a paper backed book the size of a hardcover. The print is large and easy to read with a font that encourages the eye to move along. It isn't fancy but it's very well done. The whole thing is still only 314 pages. It will sit well on your shelf later, or it will bring decent trade at your local used book store when you are done. For you more seriously contemplative readers, I have found Burroughs novels to be a fascinating look into the codes and moral aspirations of an earlier time, and I find it stimulating of deep contemplation into my own character. It is not always easy to think about who I really am, what I really believe, and why. It's so easy to simply agree with the prevailing progressive sentiments of the society around me and suspend thought. But when confronted with even fictional characters of moral clarity, whether I agree with their position or not, I realize I cannot abdicate my own character to the whims of culture. I am stimulated to take the time and make the effort to meditate on what it is I truly believe and why; to compare myself both to the ideals to which I aspire and to the old ideas I claim to reject. The caricatures of early twentieth-century society found in a Burroughs novel are a great fun-house mirror for such mind-meandering. Besides all that, it has dinosaurs!

Long time read this and forgot a lot-nice to read again
This is such a classic. Remembered the movie that was made from the first part of this book and reading the book after many years I could picture the movie all over again. Was glad to have the full stories from Burroughs that follow each upon the other in succession. Wonderful and so happy to have found all in one.

Fantastic thrillers from the creator of "Tarzan" - rates a true WOW.
The last story ties everything together - earlier short stories are self-contained imaginative masterpieces.I loved this as my 'before-bedtime-make-this-crazy-world-go-away . . . ' This book makes me smile . . . 'Heart-wrenching tension to heart-warming resolution.'

The kingpin of lost world scenarios!
An absolute treasure that is worthy of the moniker "classic." ERB never fails to deliver--action, drama, scientific analysis...a breathless scope of amazement & wonder. The fact that it's written in a Victorian "can-do" attitude makes it even more so. Truly timeless.

A trilogy you will never forget!
This is classic E.R.B.!The style is so straight forward as to sound and feel like a documentary. The language is not dumbed down for a "younger reader". It was written for the audience of any best selling author of his time. This is the complete trilogy. Although you may miss handling the books individually, the convenience of having all three of these books together is a joy. So,,, enjoy!

This is one of the great classics.
This is one of the great classics. Never a dull page. The type of the page is not teeny tiny and the story kept me going until the very end. They do no write books like this anymore.

Interesting
This is a bit whacky even for E R B. Nevertheless it is a really entertaining read, even allowing for the fact that the hero types are fearless and amazingly resourceful and the girls are equally brave but so, so reliant on him.
